One of the things I've been wanting to do is to see - or make - a list of Captain Jack's Harkness's known lovers.

Easier said than done. It isn't that Jack doesn't talk about past lovers, he does. In very vague and general terms. Acrobats, executioners.... But Estelle? Rose? He's like a clam.

A list, from memory, of Jack's known lovers:
  1. Algy, an RAF officer in World War II (seen getting his butt patted in Doctor Who 1:09, "The Empty Child")
  2. two executioners, identity and gender unknown (mentioned to Jack's computer in Doctor Who 1:10, "The Doctor Dances")
  3. Estelle Cole (seen in Torchwood 1:5, "Small Worlds")
  4. a boyfriend with a stormy temper (mentioned to Gwen Cooper in Torchwood 1:08, "They Keep Killing Suzie")
  5. that person's acrobat brother (mentioned to Gwen Cooper in Torchwood 1:08, "They Keep Killing Suzie")
  6. Captain John Hart, another Time Agent (seen in Torchwood 2:01, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", and 2:13, "Exit Wounds")
  7. an unspecified alien (mentioned in Torchwood 2:04, "Meat")
  8. a boyfriend whose nostrils flared when he lied (mentioned to Dr. Aaron Copley in Torchwood 2:06, "Reset")
  9. Jack's wife, name unknown (seen in a photograph in Torchwood 2:22, "Something Borrowed")
  10. Ianto Jones (seen in Torchwood, all episodes)
  11. Greg, a Torchwood operative who appears in the novel Twilight Streets
  12. Brendan, one of the the two alien gods from the novel Almost Perfect
  13. Jon, the other alien god from the novel Almost Perfect
  14. Professor Len, in the novel Something in the Water
  15. Michael Bellini, time-displaced in the novel Trace Memory
  16. Sam (seen in the novel Trace Memory)
  17. a Cardiff girl in the Tretarri area in 1922 (mentioned in the novel Twilight Streets)
  18. a sailor and a showgirl in 1902 (mentioned in the novel Twilight Streets)
  19. a Boston chorus girl in the early 1970s (mentioned in the novel Trace Memory[?])
  20. A repair man mentioned in the Doctor Who novel Only Human
  21. Christopher Isherwood (mentioned in Torchwood 2:06, "Reset")
  22. Marcel Proust (mentioned in Torchwood 2:07, "Dead Man Walking")
  23. "a guy with no mouth" (mentioned in Torchwood 2:12, "Fragments")
  24. the flight crew on a trip from Venus to Mars (mentioned in the radio play Lost Souls)
...Am I forgetting anyone?

Then there's a whole other category of people Jack is known to love but either hasn't had sex with, or hasn't explicitly has sex with; or whom he is known to have been attracted to:
  • the original Captain Jack Harkness, whom he loved, danced with, and kissed;
  • Gwen Cooper.
  • Should I also list Owen and Tosh? He often acts lovingly towards them, talked about "coming back for you - all of you". I'm unsure what limitations to put on this list.
  • the Chula captain from whom he stole his ship, whom he described as 'gorgeous'
  • Alice Guppy, the Torchwood operative who found him, tortured him, and seemed attracted to him, in Torchwood 2:12, "Fragments". Possibly also her boss/lover, Emily Holroyd.
  • Melody White, a Torchwood operative mentioned in The Torchwood Archives, p. 40, in tiny print
It doesn't look like such a long list, really. Not when you consider Jack must be around 200 years old at the beginning of "Exit Wounds".

Another category of people Jack has loved: the Doctor and his connections. Central core: the Doctor and Rose. More peripherally: I'd say he cares about Martha and Tish Jones, and even in a brief meeting, Donna Noble and Sarah Jane Smith. But Nine and Rose were central, and of course they overturned his life. Twice.

The Ten Best Kisses On Torchwood

...Picspam of my ten favourite Torchwood kisses. As it turns out, these are not necesarily my favourite pairings or my favourite moments, though some of them are. But Torchwood more than any other show I have ever seen has a wide variety of different kisses.

Most of the kisses we see in the show, numerically, are between Rhys and Gwen. I pretty much disqualified them because I love them all, and because they aren't usually plot related: they're just part of the loving relationship we consistently see between Gwen and Rhys. It would be like listing the air they breathe. And don't I wish Jack and Ianto kissed and touched and teased so easily, freely and often!

These choices range from the tender to the torrid. Your picks would probably not be the same as mine. After all, I left out that wonderful kiss between Jack and Ianto in "To the Last Man", and I can't help thinking it belonged here somewhere, but I couldn't think where to put it. Perhaps I should have listed the eleven best kisses... No. There are so many. This has to stop somewhere.

My picks:

10. Owen/Diane in  )

Unabashedly inspired by today's 'Writer's Block' question, I explored what I thought would be the Myers-Briggs personality types of the Torchwood team.

Captain Jack Harkness - ESTP: The Adventurer
ESTPs are action oriented, pragmatic, outgoing and realistic people. They use their quickness and flexibility to find the most efficient route to accomplishing whatever needs to be done. They are lively, entertaining, and fun. They like to be where the action is and participate fully in what is happening. Characteristically, they are direct with their comments and mince no words. They are at their best in situations that require an orientation to the present and a direct, no-nonsense, pragmatic approach.... ESTPs prefer occupations that allow flash and dash, ones in which they can respond dramatically with speed to the present needs.
"Orientation to the present" seems at first ironic when it comes to Captain Jack, but it fits rather well: he has the knack of living in the present because he has so much past and future that it would be overwhelming to be over-conscious of it. Jack is master of the ongoing 'now'

Gwen Cooper - ENFP: The Visionary
ENFPs are initiators of change who are keenly perceptive of possibilities, and who energize and stimulate through their contagious enthusiasm. They prefer the start-up phase of a project or relationship, and are tireless in the pursuit of new-found interests. ENFPs are able to anticipate the needs of others and to offer them needed help and appreciation. They bring zest, joy, liveliness, and fun to all aspects of their lives. They are at their best in situations that are fluid and changing....

ENFPs are characteristic in their pursuit of the novel, their strong sense of the possible, and outstanding intuitive powers. At the same time, they have warmth and fun with people and generally are unusually skilled in handling people. Their extraverted role tends to be well developed, as is their capacity for the novel and the dramatic.
Owen Harper - ISTP - The Realist
ISTPs are realists who apply expediency and reasoning as they manage and adapt to situations. They are aware of what is going on in the environment and are able to respond quickly to the actual facts, making sure the odds of success are in their favor. They do not like to be tied down and will feel hamstrung when they must operate within tight structures and schedules....They also find their need for excitement and action met in such occupations as surgery, electronics, car racing, bicycle racing, daredevil acts, acrobatics, athletics, and the like.
Ianto Jones - ISFJ - The Nurturer
ISFJs are sympathetic, loyal, considerate and conscientious. They will go to any amount of trouble, when it makes sense to them, to help those in need. ISFJs operate most comfortably in situations where the rules are well defined and where traditions are to be upheld. They focus on providing practical help and services for others and for the organizations they serve. They are often self-effacing in getting the job done... They are at their best quietly providing assistance and making sure things are in proper order.

...For the ISFJ, love means security and commitment. ISFJs tend to fall hard when they fall in love.

...ISFJs are willing to work long, long hours. When they undertake a task, it will be completed if at all humanly possible.

ISFJs tend to be devoted and loyal to a boss and tend to identify personally rather than institutionally.
Toshiko Sato - INTJ - The Free-Thinker
INTJs are strong individualists who seek new angles or novel ways of looking at things. They enjoy coming to new understandings. They are insightful and mentally quick; however, this mental quickness may not always be outwardly apparent to others since they keep a great deal to themselves. They are very determined people who trust their vision of the possibilities, regardless of what others think. .... INTJs are at their best in quietly and firmly developing their ideas, theories, and principles.

At work, INTJs use their conceptual strengths to analyze situations and then develop models to understand and anticipate through relentlessly to reach their goals. They will continue on with their plans, even in the face of adversity and data that might suggest to other more practical types that their goals are no longer feasible.... INTJs tend to seek occupations that allow them to change the status quo and to design models to express their vision creatively. They desire autonomy and room for growth. They prefer to work in a place in which the future can be planned and where they can work for change in an organized manner.

From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Pick a reality tv show and list 5 characters you would like to see compete on that show. Bonus question: who would win?

I don't do reality shows, except for the Andrew Lloyd Webber ones. I don't even know what the other ones are.

But if there were a reality show for competing alien hunters: hmm. I'd make two teams. Say, the UK team vs the US team.

Team one: The Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Captain Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Sapphire and Steel, and as a bonus, Myfanwy the Pterodactyl.

Team two: Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, Wolverine, Buffy, Lex Luthor (hey, this is my list, I can put whoever I want on it), Sarah Connor (ditto) and as a bonus, Lockheed the Dragon.

Who would win? Team One, because the Doctor is there. Universes may fall, allies may die en masse, the world goes to hell, but the Doctor always wins through, and Jack at least would survive. And probably Myfanwy along with him. She's a tough old bird. Proto-bird.

Assuming they don't all die, Team One would still win, because the Doctor has a sonic screwdriver. Besides, everyone loves him. Team Two would end up allying with him and pooling resources, Lockheed could teach Myfanwy to breathe fire (with barebecue sauce as fuel), and far too many people would end up in bed with Captain Jack.

That's my kind of adventure.

Some of this relates to questions raised in the storyline, but not answered in the show... yet. Sometimes it's a situation glossed over, that I'm curious about. Sometimes it's unexplained motivation. Sometimes it's just something perplexing that I like to think about. I'm not dealing with questions that I think are just writing screw-ups, of which there are a number as well; or speculation on what's going to happen. These are the ones I like to think about.

Best of all, sometimes the questions are fanfic fodder. Things to consider and explore.

In no particular order:

  1. Jack's amnesia )
  2. Gray in a drawer )
  3. Who are the Sleepers? )
  4. Who framed Toshiko? )
  5. In 'Adrift', why didn't Jack want Gwen to know about Flat Holm facility? And what other secrets does he have? )
  6. Jack's wristband )
  7. What's going on at Torchwood Two? )
  8. What happened to Torchwood Four? )
  9. Who was Jack's wife? )
  10. Who was Jack working for or with in the 1920s? )
  11. Who and what is Bilis? )
  12. Where did Captain John Hart go? )
