Torchwood: The Personalities...
Feb. 26th, 2009 11:48 amUnabashedly inspired by today's 'Writer's Block' question, I explored what I thought would be the Myers-Briggs personality types of the Torchwood team.
Captain Jack Harkness - ESTP: The Adventurer
ESTPs are action oriented, pragmatic, outgoing and realistic people. They use their quickness and flexibility to find the most efficient route to accomplishing whatever needs to be done. They are lively, entertaining, and fun. They like to be where the action is and participate fully in what is happening. Characteristically, they are direct with their comments and mince no words. They are at their best in situations that require an orientation to the present and a direct, no-nonsense, pragmatic approach.... ESTPs prefer occupations that allow flash and dash, ones in which they can respond dramatically with speed to the present needs."Orientation to the present" seems at first ironic when it comes to Captain Jack, but it fits rather well: he has the knack of living in the present because he has so much past and future that it would be overwhelming to be over-conscious of it. Jack is master of the ongoing 'now'
Gwen Cooper - ENFP: The Visionary
ENFPs are initiators of change who are keenly perceptive of possibilities, and who energize and stimulate through their contagious enthusiasm. They prefer the start-up phase of a project or relationship, and are tireless in the pursuit of new-found interests. ENFPs are able to anticipate the needs of others and to offer them needed help and appreciation. They bring zest, joy, liveliness, and fun to all aspects of their lives. They are at their best in situations that are fluid and changing....Owen Harper - ISTP - The Realist
ENFPs are characteristic in their pursuit of the novel, their strong sense of the possible, and outstanding intuitive powers. At the same time, they have warmth and fun with people and generally are unusually skilled in handling people. Their extraverted role tends to be well developed, as is their capacity for the novel and the dramatic.
ISTPs are realists who apply expediency and reasoning as they manage and adapt to situations. They are aware of what is going on in the environment and are able to respond quickly to the actual facts, making sure the odds of success are in their favor. They do not like to be tied down and will feel hamstrung when they must operate within tight structures and schedules....They also find their need for excitement and action met in such occupations as surgery, electronics, car racing, bicycle racing, daredevil acts, acrobatics, athletics, and the like.Ianto Jones - ISFJ - The Nurturer
ISFJs are sympathetic, loyal, considerate and conscientious. They will go to any amount of trouble, when it makes sense to them, to help those in need. ISFJs operate most comfortably in situations where the rules are well defined and where traditions are to be upheld. They focus on providing practical help and services for others and for the organizations they serve. They are often self-effacing in getting the job done... They are at their best quietly providing assistance and making sure things are in proper order.Toshiko Sato - INTJ - The Free-Thinker
...For the ISFJ, love means security and commitment. ISFJs tend to fall hard when they fall in love.
...ISFJs are willing to work long, long hours. When they undertake a task, it will be completed if at all humanly possible.
ISFJs tend to be devoted and loyal to a boss and tend to identify personally rather than institutionally.
INTJs are strong individualists who seek new angles or novel ways of looking at things. They enjoy coming to new understandings. They are insightful and mentally quick; however, this mental quickness may not always be outwardly apparent to others since they keep a great deal to themselves. They are very determined people who trust their vision of the possibilities, regardless of what others think. .... INTJs are at their best in quietly and firmly developing their ideas, theories, and principles.
At work, INTJs use their conceptual strengths to analyze situations and then develop models to understand and anticipate through relentlessly to reach their goals. They will continue on with their plans, even in the face of adversity and data that might suggest to other more practical types that their goals are no longer feasible.... INTJs tend to seek occupations that allow them to change the status quo and to design models to express their vision creatively. They desire autonomy and room for growth. They prefer to work in a place in which the future can be planned and where they can work for change in an organized manner.

Date: 2009-02-26 05:59 pm (UTC)As a Mathematician perhaps I should Analyze these fictional characters from a Mathematical standpoint----so--
Fermat’s Last Theorem ---undoubtedly Jack.
Leibniz’s Series for Pi--Tosh.
The Undecidability of the Continuum Hypothesis---Gwen.
Sum of the Reciprocals of the Triangular Numbers---Ianto.
Divergence of the Harmonic Series--Owen.
This is quite funny actually----
I did enjoy your ideas and it makes everyone seem much better than they seem to me and much more pleasant---

Date: 2009-02-26 07:11 pm (UTC)Yes... I would call it 'amusing' rather than 'valid'. Unfortunately fictional people can't be called upon to do it for themselves - though when I first heard of MBTI it was at a writer's group, where we were encouraged to do it for our characters. I was following the tradition.
Fermat’s Last Theorem ---undoubtedly Jack.
This is quite funny actually----
LOL - it is.
it makes everyone seem much better than they seem to me and much more pleasant-
Is that a good thing?

Date: 2009-02-26 09:30 pm (UTC)ISFJs tend to fall hard when they fall in love.
That's my precious boy. He likes to pretend he's just getting his feet wet in the wading pool, to disguise the fact that he's just done a naked swan dive from a 100' cliff into deep ocean water.
ESTPs prefer occupations that allow flash and dash

Date: 2009-02-26 10:46 pm (UTC)On the other hand, Jack may be a whirlwind, but even so he's the most constant and solid truth in Ianto's life.
For reasons that escape me at the moment, that made this poem push its way urgently to the front of my mind:
The Dancer
Butterfly
Or falling leaf,
which ought I to imitate
In my dancing?
And if she were to admit
The world weaved by her feet
Is leafless, incomplete?
And if she abandoned it,
Broke the pivotal dance,
Set loose the audience?
Then would the moon go raving,
The moon, the anchorless
Moon go swerving
Down at the earth for a catastrophic kiss.

Down at the earth for a catastrophic kiss.
Oooh - good image. Makes me think of the Jack/Ianto kiss in "Cyberwoman". Catastrophic indeed.

Date: 2009-02-26 09:32 pm (UTC)Personally I think INTJ isn't that bad a match, but I still think ISFJ is better, so it's entirely possible that's just me failing at him. XD

Date: 2009-02-26 09:45 pm (UTC)Obviously there are a lot of variations possible, and without Ianto himself doing the test (or Chris Chibnall or someone doing it for him) we won't know for sure.
It might be fun to cross-reference this with his horoscope. (If that isn't too frivolous a notion.)

Personally, I've always got the same results; but I'm pretty consistent, I guess.

The official test as done by the Myers-Briggs company is one you have to pay for, but there are all all sorts of free copies that get the same results, close enough. I think the ones I listed above are free.
