- Went to the Farmer's Market with
deakat and had a lovely time looking at beautiful organic vegetables, and meeting wonderful dogs. Marvelled at her earrings - a nice counterpoint to my glasses frames. We ate healthy popsicles and admired mini-eggplants.
- We met up with the people at Ottawa Slashers for brunch, which was fun. My eggs benedict dish was delicious, though the potatoes were peppered - I hate pepper on potatoes, but I didn't mean to eat the potatoes anyway, so it was all right.
- Went home and visited and talked with
redmtl, who was tweaking my computer. I phoned Rogers to see why my wireless connection to the Internet was so weak. Called four times, actually. The first call got a dweeb who said he changed a connection at their end, but the signal was no better. So sorry, he said, guess you have interference, nothing we can do, good-bye. When I next called back I got a much brighter soul called Nick, who caught my Cyberdyne-Skynet jokes, and eventually we found the source of my problem - my model was missing parts. So I got my panda umbrella (it had, just at that moment, started to rain) and tromped over to the nearest Rogers office, where a laconic young woman switched my old inferior modem for a new one with all parts intact.
- Now all my wireless devices connect to the Net well. Yes!
- Went to dinner with
redmtl and
maaseru. A good time, and a good meal, was had by all.
- Came home and downloaded or restored a bunch of programs to my lovely new computer. I think I will call him Lysander.
Saturday...
Aug. 13th, 2011 11:12 pm- Morning: got my hair cut. Once again, my hairdresser Vey marvelled at how fast it grows.
- Went to Costco with
maaseru, Pim, and Lil, where we took back my new computer (that turned out not to work so well) and exchanged it for a new one which, though costing a little more, is faster and bigger and prettier. It's the HP Pavillion p7-1047cb PC.
- Went to see Captain America with
lunacy_gal, Chris and Allie. Loved it. Mean to talk about it at length at some point when I'm not so tired.
- Went to dinner at The Wood on Wellington, where we were amused an impressed to see an Olympic torch. I had the fettuccine primavera. They were generous with the cheese, which won my heart.
- Apalexy collation evening. I was very tired by then; they kindly let me have one of the comfier seats and I relaxed till the collation was all done. I was delighted to find a box of cookies called "Collation" (in French, which was the side of the box facing me in the store), which seemed just the thing. They turned out to be rather good oatmeal cookies by Dare.
- Had fun talking to everyone, especially Starwolf and
auriaephialia and Sam. Though I think I may have been too tired by then to articulate normal English words. When 'Wolf talked French to me, my brain frizzled.
- Came home, chatted to Lil for a bit about my new computer.
- Tired but happy. Did I mention how tired I am?
A nice day. Still not feeling lively, but managed not to tax myself. Unlike yesterday, today had some good surprises.
Spent a good part of the afternoon wandering Costco with Lil, on the theory that my new computer has something seriously wrong with it, and it can be exchanged for a similar computer. For $100 more I can get a lot more power with a computer that's discounted for today and tomorrow only ... Hmm. I am, if you're wondering, writing this on my old computer, which really isn't that old, and still works, and I'm so very glad I kept it.
Lil found a dictionary for sale that actually failed to have the word sport in it. What's with that? I'm still wondering why Scrabble wouldn't let me play auditorium.
We treated ourselves to ice cream, afterwards. Costco still has the best ice cream ever. I couldn't even get through a whole cone - Lil now thinks I'm a Skrull impostor - but it was delicious.
We got back to my place and Lil started packing up my computer, when there was a tap on my window.

Now I can relax and read. Tomorrow will be rather busy.
Thursday...
Aug. 11th, 2011 11:33 pmAn odd day... bizarrely stressful, most of it, but I'm feeling all right now. I had an emotional breakdown that embarrasses me - I don't usually lose control, and didn't want to, then. But I did. A disappointment that should have been manageable triggered way too much distress. I felt so fragile. Is that a consequence of the surgery?
I went to work for an hour or so. I was tired and upset, but working helped me focus a little.
Then I went to see my doctor, my regular GP, who had been getting regular, somewhat alarming, reports from the hospital over the period of my surgery. She said that from the reports, she expected me to look far more sick than I do now. This was rather reassuring.
To my disappointment, none of the reports she received actually mentioned the number of gallstones I was harbouring, so I still don't know.
I then went home and discovered my new computer was not working. I couldn't turn it on. That distressed me further. I napped.
The I went out for dinner with a bunch of friends at a local pub. That was terrific, and they made me feel much better with their concern and friendliness. They even gave me a nice card. Because I was feeling jittery from a tough day, I had a drink I discovered online, called "Sex With the Captain". You can see why that would appeal to me.
( Sex With The Captain )
When I got home, I consulted Sheila, who advised me on how to fix my computer. So it's fine now. Still... I'm not too happy that it does that at all: I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. Lil thinks I should return it to the shop.
I meant to do my housework today - that vacuuming thing that crops up every now and again, when the budgie feather are knee-deep and I can't stand it any more. No, really, I like my floor to be pristine to do yoga.
But now said floor is strewn with boxes and bits of styrofoam and plastic because I bought a new computer and spent the evening setting it up - copying stuff from my other computer onto it, installing my favourite programs - VLC, Irfanview, Open Office, Spybot, that kind of thing.
It's bigger and faster and better than my other computer, so it's a joy. But really, I was fed up with all the registry problems in my old computer, which I'm not discarding or anything - I think it will be a joy to have two computers. Or three, if you count my little Acer notebook.
This is the computer, if you're curious. See,
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I haven't had much of a chance to explore the programs that came with it. Microsoft Word with ads - will that be annoying? We shall see. Maybe I'll use it to write my apa, just to test it out. Or maybe not - I've already started writing it in Open Office on my old computer.
What's Windows Live mail?
And how does one get a decent free solitaire game these days?
Strange times...
Jun. 5th, 2011 08:01 pmI had an odd emotional meltdown this weekend. This hasn't happened in a long time, and I don't think I'm very good at handling it. I'm so seldom angry I don't know what to do about it when I do get angry. And this weekend, seems I don't know how to calm down.
Give it time.
On the more cheerful side of things, my ailing computer ... well, it isn't exactly fixed, but Sheila managed to bypass the problems and I can (at least so far) do just about everything I could do a week ago - though there are probably more things I need to reinstall.
Got my scanner working again, though, and set up my book cataloguing software.
Looking for advice about printers...
May. 25th, 2011 02:22 pmI'm thinking of buying a new printer. My trusty old HP Laserjet 4+ died last summer - well, actually, something jammed, and I pulled the paper out and killed it. So I replaced it with a reconditioned Laserjet 4, which was even older, but cheap and serviceable.
Or maybe less than serviceable. I've had a lot of problems with it, and it really just isn't up to printing much. It can't handle my apazine, for example.
I don't like Inkjet printers. The ink gets used up almost immediately, or dries out, and costs a fortune. And they seem kind of... tinny. Lightweight.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I browsed at Staples on my way home, and saw they are selling the HP Laserjet P1102W for only $79.99 till the end of the month. Great deal. It doesn't do anything my current printer doesn't do, except be wireless, which isn't a big consideration - though it might be handy. I don't have a lot of experience with wireless electronics. And the Brother is wireless too.
I asked my trusty computer guru Sheila from Computertamers and she said I should phone our mutual friend Bobbi at Integrated Lasers - from whom I bought the HP Laserjet 4 - and ask her advice. So I did. Bobbi said that the Brother, besides needing toner cartridges, needs a new drum from time to time, which makes it expensive. She suggested an HP model that prints double-sided and costs about $300. I told her to research it more completely and get back to me; my thought is basically that it would be nice, but I really don't have $300 to spend up front on a printer, and don't want to wait to save up for one. And I might have more faith if the printer I bought from her last year wasn't a bit of a dud.
I did some research: a Brother HL-2270DW cartridge prints about 1400 pages, and you're supposed to get a new drum every 12,000 pages or so. A toner cartridge costs about $55. A drum costs about $200. The HP toner cartridge costs about $95.00 and has about the same output. That doesn't look like all that much difference to me; at $40 less per cartridge, I could buy a drum every 5 cartridges for the same money. (You'd tell me if I messed up the arithmetic, right?)
So the Brother's looking good. I could buy it at Best Buy for $99.99, and they deliver, but I hear their servicing is poor. I could buy it at Staples for $119.99, and they have a decent 2-year warranty. I could buy it at Amazon for $105, and they deliver too.
So: do any of you have helpful advice? Which would you buy, and where? Is there a decent printer that I'm overlooking?
Wednesday...
Oct. 27th, 2010 09:31 pmMy first physio appointment since going to France. The therapist said that if I work very hard I may still get 'functionality' in my arm. She worked it hard, and by the end of the session I could touch my left ear with my left hand for the first time since June. It hurt, mind you, but it was encouraging.
Resolution: lots and lots of exercises tomorrow. Yes, really.
Other events of the day:
- Picked up my framed original art from the framing shop (Framed!), and had a nice chat with the woman there about Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
- Got my hair cut at Vey's - at last.
- Picked up the week's comics at the Silver Snail. They were late, so the Snail didn't open till 11:30. I puttered around and browsed the Book Bazaar while waiting for them to open.
- Watched a few Man from U.N.C.L.E. vids online.
- Had a dim sum lunch with Sheila at Mandarin Ogilvie. Delicious.
- Sheila then helped me set up my new netbook, and I helped her with shopping. I haven't alked about my new netbook, have I? It replaces the one that was damaged in France: an Acer Aspire One 721, the 11.6" one. I then spent the evening rather obsessively loading programs I wanted (IrfanView, Open Office, Firefox, VideoLan) and tweaking things - and learning how to use Windows 7. It has its challenges, but I'm very happy with the computer.
- Talked to
josanpq on the phone for a while, mostly about Cryoburn, which she read (and enjoyed) today.
Steampunk computer desk...
Apr. 14th, 2010 10:13 pmA friend who knew I'd be interested sent me a link to pictures of a Steampunk Computer Desk.
Now I want one.
I particularly like the action figures on the console.
Happy day...
Sep. 28th, 2009 08:02 pmSheila is a queen among women and a Grandmaster among gurus. She got back from New York State today, and while we were chatting on the phone, I told her about how my Net connection had died. She told me a few simple steps to do - as I had hoped - and by gum, it worked. In fifteen minutes (during which we were talking about the adventures and misadventures of our respective weekends), my computer was up and working again.
So here I am, typing on my main machine again, and all is right with the world.
Computer woes...
May. 14th, 2009 10:59 pmYesterday
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Today after watching Supernatural's season-ender at her place, I came back to my place all full of glee and joy over the show, and ... discovered I'd lost my net connection. Guess what I've spent the last hour doing?
Yup. Crawling around on my own floor under my own desk fixing my own internet connection.
If you are reading this, I succeeded.
Is the universe trying to tell me something?
Happy solution to a problem...
Feb. 22nd, 2009 10:59 pmRemember how I was having problems - I couldn't save pictures by right-clicking? I shelved the problem temporarily by using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, but I much prefer Firefox, so I was grumbling a lot.
My trusty guru Sheila gave me help and moral support in downloading a new (but less up to date) version of Firefox and it now works like a dream. Joy is restored to my universe - or at least to my picture-collecting habits.
Reason for celebration...
Jan. 6th, 2009 10:12 pmI have my computer back. Oh joy and bliss. Access again!
Many friends helped me, especially
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
And
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I'm so very tired... It's been a long and stressful day. Week. Whatever. But the things that happened to counteract that make me smile.
~ ~ ~
1 It amuses me no end that most of the guys who work there seem to be named Tim, though they hired a Philip recently. Possibly an oversight? Or a pseudonym?
I got up this morning with good intentions - did a lot of laundry, had breakfast with
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
And I can't get my Linux system to connect to the Net, even though we already had my settings installed. Left a message with my repair folks.
So we borrowed
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I suppose it's time to return to the housework I was about to do.
Bother!
(no subject)
Nov. 30th, 2008 10:16 pmA busy day, which started out with going for breakfast with
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Then I had a nice chat on the phone with
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Then Lil came for a visit from Montreal, and after lunch at Harvey's we went shopping at, among other places, Ikea. I found and bought a pillow and reversible comforter-cover set that I loved, called ALVINE BÄR. It's in black and white and reminds me of some of the nicer Laura Ashley prints.
Then we went shopping in other stores and I bought Christmas presents for various people, some of whom read this, so on more details of my shopping spree my lips are sealed.
For supper we had pizza at the Colonnade, wonderful as always. Then we went back to my place and talked about photography - and her new camera, and income tax (ugh). Someone had discarded a computer monitor downstairs so I retrieved it and we plugged it into my Linux computer. Now all the Linux needs to be completely independently functional is a connection into my modem for Net access.
How'd the weekend go by so fast?
Good news...
Oct. 28th, 2008 09:47 pmLionel was over this evening, and got my Linux working with the Net at last. Happy day! I browsed a little, and he taught me to do some basic things, and maybe now it's time to buy Ubuntu for Dummies or some such useful book.
Mind you, we didn't get the printer working. It doesn't seem to like the drivers. I'm not going to worry about it for the time being.
Or: why I missed posting to LJ for a whole day.
My friend Lionel had offered to put Linux on my old computer, so I could try it out. Sure, said I, because I was curious. So last night he brought back my old computer and plugged it in to see what happened.
A while back he'd done the same for another friend, Wayne, and I think when he turned on Wayne's computer with Linux set up on it, it was all bells and whistles and everything worked perfectly and Wayne was impressed.
This time, not so much. We couldn't connect to the Net and we couldn't get the monitor ratio right. It certainly didn't look good. It wasn't... impressive.
Lionel stayed for several hours fiddling with it - must be some sort of record, for him. And then, maybe ten minutes after he'd left (promising to come back on Thursday with better ideas), my Internet connection died.
So then I was on the phone with Sheila, my personal technomage. She has a remote connection to my computer, so it was really cool seeing my cursor moving around and clicking things with my hands behind my head. I felt telekinetic. It turned out that Microsoft had sent an automatic update that was blocking my Net access and it couldn't be removed or changed. It took Sheila several hours to work around it, but she prevailed. She is a god among mortals. And she solved a few other problems while she was at it.1
By then I was tired and never wanted to look at another computer, at least until I'd had some sleep.
~ ~ ~
1 If you have computer troubles, I'd recommend her: she really does fix things, she has a nice personality, and she can work remotely on computers anywhere in North America (maybe the rest of the world too), either by instructing the owner by phone, or by doing it directly by remote access, as she did with me. Her website is Computer Tamers.
Then when I told her about Lionel's problems setting up my Linux, she laughed. "It's never easy the first time," she said.
Well... not usually.
iTunes question...
Jul. 29th, 2008 11:57 amI'm just starting, just learning, to use iTunes.
I see it has a list of radio connections, listed by genre. "Showtunes" is my favourite genre, closely followed by "Soundtracks". But those things aren't in the list. I don't see a search function. How do I do an iTunes search for radio stations playing showtunes?
