Lionel came over this evening to try to get Linux working on my old computer. It does, in fact, work fine - except it won't connect to the Net. We tried everything we (well, he) could think of and got nowhere.

Stymied.

Try a different distro? Which one is now installed? I found that Red Hat and SUSE were a bit more difficult to get online with than the Debian derivatives I've played with, especially Xandros and Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Ooops,I just noticed the title of the post.

We started out with Kubuntu, which Lionel recommended. Then we tried Ubuntu. Haven't tried others... yet. I believe Lionel is, quite rightly, trying to start me off with something I will find easy (or at least tolerable) to use.

Tomorrow I will ask Cat and Greg on IM. Do you have a service for me to relay what I learn and ask questions?

Cat says that there are some hiccups with certain chipsets that need drivers (but they are available online) that are different from the distribution versions and specific for your connection. Identifying your hardware would seem to be the next step.
I am waiting on IM when you are ready.

Thank you for asking! Interesting answer; I will relay it to Lionel.

What is your IM name? I can't use it till I'm at home - not sure when that will be - but I will log on a.s.a.p. and look for you.

Well, that sucks. I'm sure your local tech support friends will be helping all they can, but I'm wondering if it's a wired or wireless internet connection you're trying to get working. Because the former should definitely work, or are you trying to use dial-up and you're having modem problems?

One more suggestion before you give up altogether - have you tried a Linux Users Group? The Ottawa group looks pretty active, and they have mailing lists: http://oclug.on.ca/mailing_lists/. You might get some tips there, and they may even suggest you bring the machine along to a meeting for someone to look at. Or the Ubuntu forums for the particular problem you're having?

It does.

Wired. Rogers cable. Hi-speed.

have you tried a Linux Users Group?

Lionel has been trying online groups - I don't know if he tried that one. I might do some browsing myself and see if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks for the suggestions - they sound good. Crossing my fingers.
