From LJ's fannish5: Name five characters whose fashion sense you admire.

Thank you, fannish5, for giving me the opportunity for picspam.

I decided that to make this list manageable, I'd pick characters from TV shows. There are many whose look I don't like: I don't generally like the Doctor's fashion sense, for example. Eleven almost had it, but blew it with the blow tie. Nine looked good, but not striking - no, that's wrong, he was striking, but it was his presence, not his clothes, and not the way he wore them. Clark Kent's farmboy fashions didn't impress me. Dean Winchester's cowboy non-chic has a certain charm. Then there's the Trenchoat Brigade: John Constantine, Castiel, Columbo - what, do they all start with a C?

Without further ado... )

Since I posted this morning my answer to the Livejournal Writer's Block question, "What is your all-time favorite, romantic movie scene?" I thought I would answer the same question with regard to other media.

Books

From The Ringed Castle by Dorothy Dunnett; page 440 of the Century edition: the scene fans call "the anvil moment", edited here a little, by me.
...She was no longer ten, and had put to use the years of study and practice. How old, then, was she?

The year he fought his brother, they had met. )The chapter ends: Too late, too late, too late; it had happened.

Comics

In X-Men comics, the relationship between Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey (Phoenix) was so long-established I thought it would last forever, nothwithstanding Maddy Pryor. But no: it has been superseded by the love affair of Scott Summers and Emma Frost, formerly the sexpot-villainous White Queen of the Hellfire Club, and I love it. Comics don't often get romance right; but this goes beyond romance, goes to the point where sexual tension becomes plot tension. It isn't even a match of opposites, as you would think. It's a match of equals. It's brilliant.

Its apex for me is a recent comics, from a few weeks ago: Dark X-Men: The Confession, a one-shot by Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost and artist Bing Cansino. It may be difficult to keep secrets from one of the world's greatest telepaths, but Scott has a few, and Emma has been hiding things from Scott - each had secrets so terrible they thought it would destroy the other's love for them.

Hank tells Scott "these secrets will kill us". Tensions mount: Emma is on the point of leaving. So Scott says to Emma, "I don't want there to be secrets between us any more." So they have it out. )

Television

The best television romance is that between Veronica and Logan in Veronica Mars. But how to pick any particular scene or moment? All their scenes together are wonderful: picking just one would be impossible.

But their first kiss is remarkable. For one thing, this is a show built on words, clever words, dialogue, plotlines. Logan Echolls is a smart-mouth rich kid, introduced to viewers by Veronica as the "psychotic jackass" of the high school, her best friend's mouthy former boyfriend. He is one of the prime suspects in Lilly Kane's murder )

[livejournal.com profile] monsieureden sent me this interesting news: that Rob Thomas is working on the script of a Veronica Mars movie.

My fannish heart cheers.

But... yeah, there's a but. One thought is: he hasn't even written the thing yet, who's to say when/if it will be made into a movie? The TV show got well-deserved rave reviews, and was cancelled during third season. Moreover, the tight, suspenseful, witty brilliance of first season had faded to something much more random and loose by third season, and some of the best things about the show, like the wonderful sexual tension between Veronica and Logan, were being frittered away.

Then there's the precedent of Firefly, where one of the best TV shows ever was made into a movie that didn't quite play on the TV show's strengths; that relied overmuch on frantic action, and in which tragedy was the consequence of random chaos rather than meaningful themes and plotting.

Of course I want to see the love story of Veronica and Logan played out to its implausible but necessary successful conclusion. Will I get that? With a good script, characterization that's totally up to par, along with a riveting and complex mystery for Veronica to solve? How about the resolution of Keith Mars' romance with the wonderful Francine - remember that?

And the TV show caught them - the characters, and the actors playing them - at a precious and evolving point in time. Would a fully grown-up Veronica be as interesting?

Seems to me that the chances of the movie being what I actually want are slim.

On the other hand... the chances of the show's existence in the first place was improbable, and we got it anyway. As if Twin Peaks and Buffy had a bastard style in the form of the beautiful and lovable Kristen Bell.

[livejournal.com profile] raissad (and my friend StarWolf too) pointed me to this interview with Heroes creator Tim Kring. Some points... )

fajrdrako: (Veronica Mars)

I watched the last three episodes of season 3 of Veronica Mars and if I don't comment on them now, I'll forget what I wanted to say and never say it.

Such a great show. I am uncertain... )

fajrdrako: (Veronica Mars)

I hadn't seen the last five episodes of Veronica Mars. There was a sort of hiatus, at least on the station where I get it, and I taped it but hadn't watched it. I love the show, usually can't wait for the next episode - and Sheila said she wanted to discuss it with me, had asked me half a dozen times if I'd see it yet. No. Why not?

Two contradictory reasons. One is that I am rather seriously hooked on the Veronca/Logan relationship. Things didn't look good when last I'd watched; I was afraid of seeing it go wrong. I don't trust producers.

The other reason was that I didn't want it all to be over. If this is it for Veronica Mars, I wanted to delay the end.

Then last night I took the plunge and watched... )

Today I got home from work and settled down to watch episode 3.18, "I know what you'll do Next Summer", and discovered I don't have it.

Damn.

I hope Sheila recorded it.

Last night, and while doing my exercises this morning, I watched the two most recent episodes of Veronica Mars, "There's Got to be a Morning After Pill" and "Postgame Mortem". I fell in love with the show all over again. Such a lovely thickening of the plots... )

I watched this week's Veronica Mars today. Oh my goodness. When they do a story-arc ending, it really does has impact, doesn't it? Once again Logan broke my heart... twice... in the best possible way. More specific comments... )

Can anyone tell me what is happening with Veronica Mars now? Is this the hiatus? When is it coming back on TV? How long do I have to wait?
