From LJ's fannish5: Name five characters whose fashion sense you admire.

Thank you, fannish5, for giving me the opportunity for picspam.

I decided that to make this list manageable, I'd pick characters from TV shows. There are many whose look I don't like: I don't generally like the Doctor's fashion sense, for example. Eleven almost had it, but blew it with the blow tie. Nine looked good, but not striking - no, that's wrong, he was striking, but it was his presence, not his clothes, and not the way he wore them. Clark Kent's farmboy fashions didn't impress me. Dean Winchester's cowboy non-chic has a certain charm. Then there's the Trenchoat Brigade: John Constantine, Castiel, Columbo - what, do they all start with a C?

  1. Captain Jack Harkness, Torchwood

In my choices here, it's partly the clothing, but it's also the style of the character - their clothes and the way they wear them. Unsuprisingly, the first character who came to mind was Captain Jack Harkness, whose Vintage Military is not the dress style of a straight man. But for an omnisexual adventurer from the 51st century, it's just the thing.

But it's macho and hot and gorgeous. That swishy greatcoat - oh,yes.

The style works even without the jacket, in shirt sleeves:

    Or half-dressed:

    Or undressed:

Then as a bonus, we get that wonderful black waistcoat:

    Best costuming ever.

  2. Inara Serra, Firefly

All the costumes in Firefly were perfect: each reflected the character of the person who wore them, each was convincingly realistic, each looked good in his or her way. But Inara, the elegant, sumptuous Companion, the whore with class, she always looked wonderful. Her clothes had flow, and a satin texture, and a whiff of the far east. Her clothes looked as if they would smell of delicate perfumes, and be silky to the touch.

  3. Captain John Hart, the wild rogue of Torchwood

Yeah, I have a thing for scarlet worsted, high collars, short waists, and military frogging. If it weren't Captain John Hart here, it would be Richard Sharpe. (Near miss.)

    And from the back:

  4. Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars

It isn't just that Kirsten Bell is so beautiful. It's that she wore the kinds of things that anyone might wear to school, and wore them expressively. Veronica liked to wear jackets over T-shirts: so do I.

We can even look at a website that tells us where to get Veronica's school clothes:

Here's Veronica in a sleuthing jacket:

    And another one:

    And another:

How many jackets did that girl own?

  5. Bodie, The Professionals

Bodie was always a joy for the eye. I'm going back to a major favourite here, and glossing over the fact that Bodie at times wore the worst late-1970s eye-offending outfits to ever be seen on television. But Bodie, when he got into his stride, was superb: a vision in corduroy trousers, tight jeans, leather jackets, and woolly polo-necks.

There's the light coloured jacket with the pink shirt:

The same jacket with a black polo-neck:

Which can be worn on any occasion:

Then there's that jacket, the one he wore so often:

And sometimes with a white shirt:

The tan jacket - or is it mustard? This man has more jackets than Veronica Mars:

    And finally, the blue T-shirt:

That first VM jacket is actually the same as the last one, where you ask, how many jackets did this girl own?

I don't have a VM icon, however.
