Last night, and while doing my exercises this morning, I watched the two most recent episodes of Veronica Mars, "There's Got to be a Morning After Pill" and "Postgame Mortem". I fell in love with the show all over again.

Things I loved:

1. I loved Logan Echolls. Okay, no news there. I always love Logan Echolls. But I particularly love him drowning in his own grief over Veronica, befriending an eleven-year-old, and then going back to class - with an apple. Scruffy, smart-ass suffer-puppy.

2. Heather was way cool. How could her older sister be such a bimbo?

3. And how can Dick be such a dick? Really, each episode seems to reach new depths of Dick stupidity. He is admittedly funny but I fear he's a one-joke pony.

4. I did love Logan's blase reactions to Dick's adventures.

4. Will we ever see Dick's father again? Or Kendall? Or Aaron Echolls? I keep expecting the old bad pennies to crop up. The ones that are still alive, or just pretending to be dead. Or, as far as that goes - is Duncan Kane gone forever, with his kid? I really hope so.

5. Wallace! Seems like a while since we'd seen him, and he wasn't exactly prominent here. This pleases me, as I am not a big Wallace fan. He's okay but I don't miss him when he's gone.

6. Loved the whole theme of Veronica spitefully going after Madison's car with help from Weevil. Love Weevil's dialogue.

7. Mindy O'Dell looks guiltier to me all the time. She's on an illicit adulterous overnight tryst with her lover in a swanky hotel and he watches TV while she goes to bed? There's something wrong with that picture. Of course, this is Veronica Mars and whoever killed Dean O'Dell is probably someone I haven't fingered yet. (Madison? Hee.)

8. Keith remains wonderful.

9. We saw Backup again! I love Backup.

10. Logan rules.

See, the thing (or, one of the many) that bother me about VM is that a lot of the characters seem to have lost their function. And the problem is that the entire depth of said characters seem to revolve around their specific functions, so that makes it worse. Like Wallace, who was wonderful in Season One, but his entire role was to be all yay BFF with Veronica when no one else would. Now, though, Veronica has friends, and Mac seems better suited for the friendy thing than Wallace, especially because him and her have drifted so much over the seasons.

I appreciate the creators' attempts to give these characters new layers now that they've lost their old functions (like the characters arcs of Weevil in season two, or Wallace and his dad, stuff like that) but unfortunately, they're never quite as wonderfully integrated as they were in season one. So it feels a bit jarring to see them now in season three, and much as I love (loved?) a lot of these characters, I kinda wish the creators would just let them go. Or at least, let them go as relatively permanent fixtures on the cast.

I don't know how much sense that makes, but hopefully that didn't sound too drunken. Having said all of that, I think I like season three a lot more than season two; the clutter of plotlines isn't obvious anymore and it has lost the weight and heaviness of all of the old angst. In a good way.

P.S. Hopefully you got my e-mail from a quadrillion years ago, and once again I would like to reiterate that I am so very very sorry for not being able to beta that story.

There are a few dropped characters I miss. I really, really liked Wallace's mother, who just disappeared.

I agree with you in principle about Wallace - that he was Veronica's friend when she needed a friend - problem was, I never really liked him much as a character in his own right beyond that. He was a sidekick in the unimpressive way - not really doing much that was effective, but being someone Veronica could talk to for plot exposition. I didn't like the ongoing season 2 plot of his father and his girlfriend, either - it seemed kind of unstructured. I do like the way Mac has developed as a character.

I like the plotlines of season three better than season 2. I liked the plot of Kendall Casablancas until it reached a - to my mind - inconclusive end. Or anticlimactic end.

Yes, I got your email, and I am still intending to reply to it! I really wasn't ignoring you - just like I'm not ignoring the stories needing a second draft - disorganization is my middle name. Sometimes. (Blush.)

Yeah, I basically agree with you re: everything.

problem was, I never really liked him much as a character in his own right beyond that.

I definitely agree, and I suspect this was because the writers never gave him any depth to start with. And then in S2, when they try and backpedal to give him more complexity, it's too rushed and sloppy to buy into.

Which is also, incidentally, why I like Mac — even before she really entered Veronica's sphere of good friends, they gave her backstory and character and quirks, so she's not just Default Wallace Replacement, or Default Veronica Pal, but an interesting person in her own right.

And yeah, I miss Wallace's mom, too. Especially because she just kinda dropped off the face of the Earth without any solid conclusion.

Hehh. I totally sympathize with the disorganization thing. :D

Yes. He was very nice and I liked it when he developed his interest and expertise in basketball, but - even so, I'm not very interested in sports! Especially compared to Veronica, Wallace seemed lacking in wit and ingenuity, and rather too likely to let a pretty girl walk all over him.

Yes, Mac seems very real, in a good way.

Funny that they never explained what happened to Wallace's mother, or why she broke up with Keith.

Disorganization... my worst enemy! My constant companion!
