Wiscon curiosity and feminism...

I was taking a peek at a site talking about Wiscon, out of curiosity. This caught my eye:
I was made incandescent with rage over academic elitism and incited to reactionary judgments by a panelist’s subjective experiences with Tolkien.Tolkien, pro or con - always a nice topic for a controversy!
Also intriguing:
Today I attended my favorite panel so far. The discussion on hard sci-fi and on why lists of hard SF authors rarely include women was absolutely riveting, with brilliant panelists and an engaged crowd.Okay, that sounds worth hearing - but what did they say?
Reminds me of something I was listening to on CBC radio a couple of days ago: an interview with women in Hollywood about why women make up only 16% of those in the film industry and only 26% in the television industry - and want to bet that's concentrated somewhat on daytime and 'women's' shows? The main topic was how all the big blockbuster movies (except Sex and the City) are made for boys and men - which I don't think is entirely true, I would have said the Indiana Jones was on the gender-neutral side, on the whole. But... that might reflect the circles I move in.
The movies I want to see just don't get made. I'm not holding my breath.

With a subpage with Martin Shaw screen caps and so forth: http://www.ci5addict.com/subpages/CI5pics_ms.html
And if you go to my journal and hit the martin_shaw tag, you will get me blathering on about him. (http://agentxpndble.livejournal.com/tag/martin_shaw)
:)))
I was lucky enough to see him in Man For All Seasons Too - It was amazing.

I am so envious! Wasn't that the one his daughter was also in? Or am I confusing it with something else?

Date: 2008-05-29 05:06 am (UTC)Thanks - Anything I've made here (http://pics.livejournal.com/agentxpndble/gallery/0000e4dr) is ok for sharing.
I like your site.
Thank you! :-)

Yes - That was super-awesome (as if Martin wasn't enough.) The trip to London to see that show, plus another, plus meet up with several of my fandom friends from around the World was a once in a lifetime trip. I had to make some sacrifices to make it happen but it was so, so worth it.

Date: 2008-05-29 11:06 am (UTC)Thank you so much! Does that go for your other icons, too? They're lovely! I love it that you have an Earnest Shepard one. And though I don't usually like Doctor/Rose icons, I really like the "Universal language" one.
As for Pros Murphy! And Cowley! Oh, what a treasure trove! And all those beautiful combinations of Bodie and Doyle! Very nice indeed.
That trip sounds so wonderful. Yes, sometimes it's just worth it - whatever the cost.

Date: 2008-05-29 02:29 am (UTC)So I've seen that, which then made me read all of PD James that I could find at my library, because I knew he'd done some PD James. Reading the books it seemed such an obvious and perfect fit for him. Finally seeing them was... WOW.
And... that's all I've seen of him! I've had The Last Place on Earth on my Amazon wishlist since forever.

Date: 2008-05-29 05:13 am (UTC)I would *highly* recommend the Scarlet Pimpernel series he was in (http://www.amazon.com/Scarlet-Pimpernel-Boxed-Set/dp/0767026128/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1212037796&sr=8-2) - It's what made me fall for him. I also really liked him in Judge John Deed, but his character is a bit of an ass in that.
BTW, I friended you so you can see my locked Shaw posts and because we seem to have a lot of common interests - I'm currently OBSESSED with Ianto/Jack.

Yes, I've seen The Scarlet Pimpernel he was in - totally loved him, couldn't stand Richard E. Grant!

Thank you so much! I'll friend you too, if that's all right.

Excellent! I'm obsessed with Jack - and Ianto goes with the territory. (So nicely, too.)

How wonderful! Music to my ears.

Date: 2008-05-29 02:07 pm (UTC)Okay, I'd better get busy with Netflix! But before I get all excited, what the hell is happening in the third icon from the left, top row, on your Professionals icon page? I'm going to assume it's not what it looks like? And what about the "comfort" one? What's going on?
Huh? Huh? Huh? Huh? Huh?

Date: 2008-05-29 02:29 pm (UTC)And your icon about sums up why I love those guys; Ianto is so ferocious when his man is in danger. *growl*

Date: 2008-05-29 02:32 pm (UTC)I love that! Stun gun and all. I also love the way Ianto is so emotional and dedicated. And smart.
He's not the only pairing I like or want for Jack, but he's delicious.

Date: 2008-05-29 03:58 pm (UTC)Yes yes yes about the high emotions. Ianto didn't even register on my brain until "Cyberwoman".
I wish Eccleston and Uncle Rusty could have worked out some real forgiveness and love (and lovin') between Nine and Jack. An excellent opportunity for canonical hurt/comfort, pissed away. I imagine that love with Nine would have been wonderfully overwhelming for Jack.
If Eccleston had been my boyfriend I would have begged him to stay with the series. It would have been fun to watch some hypothetical episode that had Nine being chirpy at Jack, Ianto rolling his eyes at Nine, and Jack loving all the attention. :-)
ETA: Wonderfully overwhelming and comforting, completing, restoring. Such a love would go a long way to healing Jack. I can imagine Jack beautifully, silently, even tearfully surrendering himself.

Date: 2008-05-29 05:15 pm (UTC)Ahhahaha! You *have* to get into the Professionals. Ah, a fresh, innocent mind to corrupt. :))) It's the slashiest show ever made. With plenty of het as well. The third form the top icon is an episode where Shaw's character is undercover (snerk) with this female cop - So they *have* to sleep together, right? To be convincing and all. ;-)
"Comfort" is a show favorite - the Lads are having the stuffing kicked out of them by their trainer and Shaw gets spun off into Collins's waiting arms.
Search for "professionals shaw" at YouTube and get a taste of what you are missing. HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVzbBBIXkEg) is a sampler of favorite moments.

I'm trying to think of something slashier. Hmm. No, you're right.

I love that scene!
Nice YouTube clip. I didn't remember "Can I have a clean glass?" - perhaps I should be watching Pros again all over. There was a time I had just about every word memorized!

Date: 2008-05-30 12:22 pm (UTC)That's so unfair. It's just not right! I think I still have my video-tapes somewhere - but I'm not sure where. I have the book that accompanied the show; great pictures.
