I was taking a peek at a site talking about Wiscon, out of curiosity. This caught my eye:
I was made incandescent with rage over academic elitism and incited to reactionary judgments by a panelist’s subjective experiences with Tolkien.
Tolkien, pro or con - always a nice topic for a controversy!

Also intriguing:
Today I attended my favorite panel so far. The discussion on hard sci-fi and on why lists of hard SF authors rarely include women was absolutely riveting, with brilliant panelists and an engaged crowd.
Okay, that sounds worth hearing - but what did they say?

Reminds me of something I was listening to on CBC radio a couple of days ago: an interview with women in Hollywood about why women make up only 16% of those in the film industry and only 26% in the television industry - and want to bet that's concentrated somewhat on daytime and 'women's' shows? The main topic was how all the big blockbuster movies (except Sex and the City) are made for boys and men - which I don't think is entirely true, I would have said the Indiana Jones was on the gender-neutral side, on the whole. But... that might reflect the circles I move in.

The movies I want to see just don't get made. I'm not holding my breath.

StunGun!Ianto is stunning.

Yes yes yes about the high emotions. Ianto didn't even register on my brain until "Cyberwoman".

I wish Eccleston and Uncle Rusty could have worked out some real forgiveness and love (and lovin') between Nine and Jack. An excellent opportunity for canonical hurt/comfort, pissed away. I imagine that love with Nine would have been wonderfully overwhelming for Jack.

If Eccleston had been my boyfriend I would have begged him to stay with the series. It would have been fun to watch some hypothetical episode that had Nine being chirpy at Jack, Ianto rolling his eyes at Nine, and Jack loving all the attention. :-)

ETA: Wonderfully overwhelming and comforting, completing, restoring. Such a love would go a long way to healing Jack. I can imagine Jack beautifully, silently, even tearfully surrendering himself.

He is. I wouldn't want to be between him and his goal - especially if it's endangered Jack!

As I read it; Nine loved Jack. Ten has too many problems to love anyone properly but there's hope.

I imagine that love with Nine would have been wonderfully overwhelming for Jack.

I think it was, and Jack never got over it. (Probably never will.)

If Eccleston had been my boyfriend I would have begged him to stay with the series.

Begging, bribery - whatever works!

Such a love would go a long way to healing Jack. I can imagine Jack beautifully, silently, even tearfully surrendering himself.

Oh, absolutely. It's what he needs.

Especially now, after 2,000 in a hole.

He's loving and and wonderful, but Ianto has never experienced devastation on such a scale: the Doctor has. Jack needs some strong medicine right about now.

I'm sorry, I just can't warm up to Ten at all. I miss Nine's black intensity. It will always be Nine I picture with Jack.

Ianto, in his twenties, has had so much less experience of anything than Jack. And all his experience is on one planet - probably of one country on that planet. No wonder he thinks Jack's sexuality is 'innovative'.

I miss Nine's black intensity.

So do I!

It will always be Nine I picture with Jack.

Me too, mostly because everything we've seen of Ten with Jack has been somewhat abusive.

somewhat abusive

Thanks for giving your life to save the world, but you're icky and tainted and you bother me. Don't have time for your questions, seeya bye.

Nine would have shown him the respect he deserved. Beginning with a nice long apology for buggering off in the first place, one hopes. Or any kind of apology, really. Nine would notice that Jack had changed. Nine would know what it meant. Nine would give a shit.

Nine is so deeply moral; the kind of man who would inspire Jack to be a better man. Ten? Ten doesn't have that power. He's too light, too scattered. Nine was clarity, focus, and strength.

Aaaaaaaand yeah. I miss him a lot.

"And while I'm at it, let me destroy your vortex manipulator to trap you here."

Nine would have shown him the respect he deserved.

And affection too, I'd hope.

Ten only said "sorry" while Jack lay dead.

Nine would give a shit.

He would. And he would understand.

Nine is so deeply moral; the kind of man who would inspire Jack to be a better man.

And who did, with so many repercussions in Jack's life.

Ten doesn't have that power. He's too light, too scattered.

Ten scolds him for having a gun, and for flirting.... that's about it.

I miss him a lot.

Yeah. All I can do is watch the same episodes over again!
