I just read Tales of Suspense #52 for the first time. I didn't read any of the comics featuring Iron Man when I was young; my allowance barely stretched to my true addictions of Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Journey Into Mystery, Daredevil and X-Men - and okay, maybe the occasional Strange Tales, because of Doctor Strange.

But not Iron Man, so I never read this one before.

And I read it today, because I went to see The Avengers again, this time with Tasia, who hadn't yet seen it. Not a comic book reader, she asked me about Black Widow's history. I knew she had dated Tony Stark way back then, but realized I'd never read anything about her early career - nothing before she joined The Avengers. So I read it; better late than never.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed both story and art. Larry Lieber drew a fine Tony Stark.

Ahh, Natasha. I'm so glad you went with the Americans and became an Avenger.

A song for those of us who are addicted to George R.R. Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire.

Write like the Wind (George R.R. Martin).

I hope he's listening.

A good day...

  • Went to the gym; it felt good. Allie was telling us about how she and her husband are training for Movnat, which he is going to teach. Interesting and intriguing.

  • Had breakfast at Zeller's with [personal profile] maaseru. $3.99 for bacon and eggs, toast and coffee. And rather good jam.

  • Went to the funeral of Edward Sullivan. Because he was a musician, it was a very musical funderal, with a Sax Quartet and English Horn, and they started out playing "The Entertainer" - a piece I've always liked. They also played "The Swan of Tuonela" by Sibelius, which was interesting music. I also enjoyed hearing Edward's nieces talking about their memories of "Uncle Evie".

  • Had a visit from Val, John, and Lil. We sat around talking in my living room for a while (and watching the Spain/France EuroCup game), and then went to supper at the LoneStar on St. Laurent. I ordered the steak and ribs; the steak was mediocre, the ribs were fantastic. They have a new dessert item - butter tarts. Very nice indeed. I also had a Long Island Iced Tea. I really, really need to make a list of alcoholic drinks which I actually like and which I can order in restaurants.

  • Went to the Pho Bo Ga II to see [personal profile] fairestcat and [personal profile] commodorified, who just got back from their trip to the States, tired but happy. Sat with them and various friends and heard about Wiscon, Con-Text, and various con-and-travel adventures.

  • Walked home. It was cooler this evening, and a pleasant walk, even though I was wearing a dress and shoes that are less than optimal. I passed several balcony parties, and people in the Glebe were setting off fireworks, making me jump. Canada Day is more than a week away - perhaps it was for St-Jean Baptiste?
