Tales of Suspense... and spies.

I just read Tales of Suspense #52 for the first time. I didn't read any of the comics featuring Iron Man when I was young; my allowance barely stretched to my true addictions of Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Journey Into Mystery, Daredevil and X-Men - and okay, maybe the occasional Strange Tales, because of Doctor Strange.

But not Iron Man, so I never read this one before.

And I read it today, because I went to see The Avengers again, this time with Tasia, who hadn't yet seen it. Not a comic book reader, she asked me about Black Widow's history. I knew she had dated Tony Stark way back then, but realized I'd never read anything about her early career - nothing before she joined The Avengers. So I read it; better late than never.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed both story and art. Larry Lieber drew a fine Tony Stark.

Ahh, Natasha. I'm so glad you went with the Americans and became an Avenger.

I've glimpsed her now and again.

The retroactive addition of Winter Soldier to her backstory is working amazingly, though. Adds an extra zing to all those times when she was heartless when, ah, younger.

Yes, I'm loving all of that. She's good with Bucky; there's a sort of doubled poignancy because of the experiences they have both had.

I do miss the days when she was with Daredevil, though.
