Had a lovely evening with [livejournal.com profile] commodorified, [livejournal.com profile] auriaphialia, and [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze. I made macaroni and cheese without wheat, using corn pasta, and then discovered that [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze has a problem with corn. Ah well, next time I'll know! We spent a lot of time in conversation and then watched the Due South episode "Some Like it Hot". Much enjoyed by all. I've been thinking all along that this show, much as I'm enjoying it, just isn't nearly as slashy as I'd been led to believe. This episode was slashy. Which was fun. And I liked the connection between school, nuns, and gangsters. Does anyone know where I can get screencaps of it?

We made an agreement to meet up on Wednesdays, as a day potentially convenient to us all (and spouses, for those who have them).

Does anyone know a good source of wheat-free recipes?

You mean "Some Like It Red" the episode where Fraser dresses up as Miss Fraser?

Mileage of course will vary but I think the slashy vibe on this show started when RayK appeared on the scene at the beginning of the third season.

I guess I do! I asked the title and that's what someone said; I didn't actually see it or look at the box. Which I should. Bad fan, me.

I've heard people say that about Ray K. My original involvement in the fandom was before Ray K came along so I don't know much about him. [livejournal.com profile] commodorified mutters occasionally about "skipping ahead to season 3" and we all say "No, no, no," and that's that - I don't know why she says it, but slashiness may be the reason.

Search online for support sites for those on the autistic spectrum; many such folks are helped by avoiding wheat gluten (so many that some people with only good intentions are pretty insistent that ALL of us on the spectrum need to live gluten-free, no exceptions). Anyway, you will find many resources that way. Also, mainstream bookstores are also a good place to look -- enough folks are insensitive to gluten that quite a few cookbooks and also just dietary guides are out now. Good luck.

Yes. I do have one book and it will serve me for a while, but I think it's time to compile a few recipes. And maybe to invest in some potato flour, rice flour, and a few cannisters.

Do you have any good ideas for fresh asparagus...?

Fresh asparagus (one of the greatest foods there are) is best just lightly steamed. Maybe with a little butter. I've had it with delicate sauces (like lemon butter) but really, I like it best with minimal preparation.

I've taken to like asaparagus lightly boiled or steamed, then cooled and nibbled as a snack. Maybe with a little salt, but it doesn't even need that.

Ah! I like the "cooled and nibbled as a snack" idea. Thank you!

I think dS gets slashier when RayK shows up (though Fraser/Vecchio slashers would no doubt disagree).

But when even Paul Gross himself refers to the RayK series as being 'totally homoerotic' there must be something in it! (Not to mention the infamous outtakes.)

Are the outtakes on the DVDs?

Incidentally, don't you mean [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze rather than [livejournal.com profile] raynekatz?

Oops. [Blush.] Thanks for catching that.

I love "Some Like It Hot", although for reasons not always associated with the usual fannish reasons. But the dialogue in the final scene is fantastic, and I love the "I can't take her anywhere" exasperation of Ray, and Fraser insisting on Ray opening his car door for him.

Of course, the wider fandom on LJ disagrees with me, but I do find S1/2 much slashier than S3, though in a totally different way. (I actually started with S3, and I didn't even think Fraser and RayK liked each other.) Although I can sort of see why people think S3 is slashy (although, not really, because I don't see much, or any, physical chemistry), it seems more of the verbal "what they said" kind of thing, and even one "famous" slashy scene just reads as uncomfortable to me; in S1/2, for me, the slashiness screams out of body language and some of the subtleties. For instance, "Chinatown" used to bore the everloving crap out of me; however, if I look at it as Fraser and Ray getting interrupted on a date, it makes so much more sense. And the "old married couple" dialogue is pretty intense, at the same time "Chicago Holiday" ends with Fraser saying, "And sometimes, when you wait, the universe comes to you," while gazing at Ray. There's also a plot point in "One Good Man (AKA Thank You Kindly, Frank Capra)" that seems the slashiest thing I've ever seen or heard, but I don't know if you're there yet, so I won't spoil!

Obviously, everybody's temperature is in a different space — I just love the intimacy and interaction of Ray V and Fraser a lot more than some of the "intentional slashiness" of more recent TV shows.* And there's a moment in the finale that just hit me between the eyes before I even knew who Ray V was!

*The only reason Jack/Nine works for me like it does is that CE and JB have such chemistry; the way they play off each other rhythmically in dialogue, and the way their bodies mirror each other so easily (similar to Fraser and RayV, IMO) sells it. With Jack/Ten, I see Jack/JB trying, but there's something slightly forced about Ten/DT which works dramatically if you read it that the Doctor's feelings had changed, possibly through the regeneration — something I wish they'd bother to deal with in some way rather than that idiotic "fixed point in time" balderdash. It could have been so much more interesting, but they had sets to blow up and scenery to chew, apparently.

Hi!

Yes, I am this far behind on LJ.

Which was totally wonderful.

We'll see what I think of season 3 (and RayK) when I get there.

The end of season 2, you mean?

The only reason Jack/Nine works for me like it does is that CE and JB have such chemistry

My goodness,yes.

With Jack/Ten, I see Jack/JB trying, but there's something slightly forced about Ten/DT which works dramatically if you read it that the Doctor's feelings had changed, possibly through the regeneration

This is my interpretation - that, or that Ten's ability to relate to people has been destroyed through trauma. This seemed even clearer to me in "Journey's End", where he couldn't even accept Rose back. Perhaps the guilt of having sent Jack to his death had something to do with it?

It could have been so much more interesting, but they had sets to blow up and scenery to chew, apparently.

Clearly.
