Tonight was Apaplexy collation at StarWolf's place. A good time was had by all.

Before that, I visited [livejournal.com profile] lunacy_gal and funkym3485, and had a lovely time. [livejournal.com profile] funkym3485 had his comics from the 1990s and I was happily reading old issues of Uncanny X-men that I'd missed first time round - never did know how that Genosha business happened - and issues of X-Force and Excalibur from about the same time. A few thoughts:

Writers I loved then and still love now: Fabian Nicieza, Warren Ellis, Scott Lobdell. Not that I like Warren Ellis' work so much now: it was his work for Marvel that I love. Oh, that Pete Wisdom. I miss him.

Artists I loved then and still love now: Carlos Pacheco, Chris Bachalo, Andy Kubert.

Writers and artist I didn't like then and still don't like: Alan Davis, Steve Skroce, Tom Raney, Tom DeFalco.

Mixed feelings about Brandon Peterson.

A treat: seeing art by Jim Cheung - under the name of Jimmy Cheung - in Uncanny X-men vol. 1 #371. Back before I knew who he was or what his work looked like. Love his version of Nick Fury!

Reading those comics reminded me how wonderful Gambit used to be. How did he become as dull an bland as he is now? And why?

Last night I watched The Losers, another film based on a comic book.

And I loved it.

First of all, it stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, whom I don't seem to see nearly enough.

Secondly, as soon as it started, I thought, "This is Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos", variation #6,020. And from that moment on, the protagonist, Clay, was in my mind a ringer for Nick Fury and I couldn't escape the thought. (As if I would want to.) Yeah, it's a Nick Fury who grew up to be a special ops action-man soldier, not the man of mystery Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but the difference isn't significant. I'd love to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan cast as Nick Fury in a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie. It isn't going to happen - Samuel Jackson has the part bagged, and when that public memory fades and it's time for a change, Morgan will be too old. Which is a shame. At least he's there as the Fury of my imagination.

And as Franklin Clay. Nice part. I immediately wanted to read and write Clay/Cougar slash, but so far I've only found one story online that does - very short, but good. I fell for Cougar's lovely smile. And his hat. Yeah, I quickly developed a crush on Cougar. Most of the slash out there seems to be Clay/Jensen, or Cougar/Jensen, which is fine too, though in some indefinable way it makes me feel old - do I perceive Jensen as very young? I guess I do. Which is odd, because he isn't much younger than Captain America... unless you factor in the fact that Cap is 90 if he's a day. Well preserved. Nice trick, iceberg.

The Losers started life as a comic put out by Vertigo (DC's adult line), by Andy Diggle. Looking at it quickly, I see why I didn't read it: I'm not a big Vertigo fan. I find their comics as a whole to be too violent, too harsh in tone, too archly clever. This was the case here, and the art by Jock didn't appeal.

But the film was most palatable.

Okay, I'll make another confession here, since I'm into the comics-obsession thing: Cougar reminded me of Gambit, one of my comic book favourites, which is an odd fit because Gambit is chatty and charming, not tough and laconic. But I got the same vibe, especially with that Cougar smile. And Gambit wore a hat in the Wolverine movie, though his role was sadly wasted.

It was also fun that I am in the middle of reading my way through "Troubleshooters", a series of romantic thrillers by Suzanne Brockmann, in which the heroes are all tough Navy SEALS. The guys in The Losers fit the paradigm rather nicely, though they play with higher tech.

Ah, now, here's something I can get my teeth into: The Thirty Days of Marvel Meme, Marvel fangirl I am and have been ever since I read... No, no, saying it now would be getting ahead of the game, wouldn't it?

Day #1: Your favourite character )

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Lots of action, lots of movement, many close-ups of Hugh Jackman breathing heavily. Not a bad thing. It isn't the X-Men movie I really want - I'll never get that - but it was fun in many ways. They played fast and loose with the canon I know - but the comics have done that, too. What a feared most was that Gambit would be sleazy or evil. And he isn't.

I loved Gambit. Love the personality - even the plot background given, apparently eliminating the Sinister connection, but connection him to Stryker's similar mutant projects. I loved his acrobatics (and wanted more) and his coat and his staff and the use of his powers, especially the fiery playing cards fanning and zipping from his fingers. Dare I hope there'll be a Gambit movie one day?

Okay, there's a flaw... )

Fanning my fannish excitement about the upcoming movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I was looking at screencaps of the trailer by [livejournal.com profile] mediocrechick. And I was thrilled to see this picture of Gambit... )

The stance, the motion, the staff, even the hair - perfect.

Gambit...

1 The loooks depend what artist is drawing any given issue. I don't know many comic book characters whose looks change so much from one artist to the next. Clark Kent? Bruce Wayne? Peter Parker? They always look more or less the same. Gambit? Different all the time.

Of course, this is suitable: he is chameleonic.

But he isn't a Skrull shapeshifter.

2 The more insightful among you may notice that Gambit has certain characteristics in common with Captain Jack Harkness.

So I went to look at the IMDb entry on the Wolverine: Origins movie. A few interesting tidbits... )

fajrdrako: ([X-Men])

I am in a state of fangirl glee: I just saw the trailer for the coming Wolverine movie. And it features Gambit. It hints at X-Men. We get Sabretooth, of course. It shows a number of people I ought to know or guess - but I can't tell which one is Deadpool. Who is the vampire at the end?

I'll have to see it to know, of course. But... Gambit and Wolverine! Even if the rest of the movie is terrible, we'll get Gambit at last. And Wolverine too.

I guess I should read Wolverine: Origins before seeing this.

Who is it that says, "Don't worry, we'll get him?" Is that Deadpool? Doesn't sound like Deadpool...

Two of my budgies died today. Gambit died around 11 a.m.; Pryde probably an hour or so after that, though I was out, and didn't find her till I got home hours later.

Cause of death? I'm almost certain it was teflon poisoning. I'd been cooking some vegetables in a teflon pan; it burned dry. I didn't think much about it - these things happen - but it turns out that teflon fumes are extremely toxic for budgies. I had no idea.

Logan seems to be all right. I'm hoping that having lasted this long after the burned-pot incident, the danger is over for him.
