This New York Times article about current TV shows is fun. I went to it for the Torchwood mention - which is a big spoiler if you haven't seen the end of series 2 yet, and most Canadians haven't.

I was amused by their easy acceptance of slash:
HOUSE (Fox, Sept. 16) Will prime time’s most unhealthy, obsessive love affair — the one between Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) and Dr. Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) — survive the fact that House was instrumental in Wilson’s girlfriend’s death? Early episodes are inconclusive, but we all know that they’ll patch things up somehow.

I don't like the comments on Heroes at all. Sounds like more new characters (faugh) and focus on the old characters I didn't like (Maya). Ah well: gives me an excuse not to watch, when I don't have time anyway. Who am I kidding? Of course I'll watch, initially at least, if only to see how Nathan Petrelli survives - and because I want to see Peter Petrelli again.

GAK!

Thank you, so very much, for slapping me in the face with a huge House spoiler I had not previously encountered when I'm a season behind. *headdesk*

Sorry! I haven't seen House since the first season and I've no idea about any of it - I didn't even know there was a spoiler there. I was just amused by the easy acceptance of the House/Wilson pairing in a newspaper - that was something that wouldn't happen ten years ago. Now it's casual and commonplace.

It foolishly doesn't generally occur to me that people on my flist actually watch House still. But of course they do. For all I know I might be the only person who doesn't.

Given that that episode aired last May, and the season box set has been out for several weeks, I don't think it's unreasonable to mention what happened in House S4. Besides, what actually happened is more complicated than that...

Yes, I love the easy acceptance of slash, too. Has the cultural zeitgeist changed w/o us quite realizing it?

BTW, I watch House (Sept. 16 is already in my day book) and I'm curious how they will resolve this one (regardless of my unhappiness with some of S4, particular the way the ending was shaped).

Ususally the case.

Since I first got into slash in the late 1970s, the difference is amazing. It was all very covert; even at conventions where slash was sold it was treated as something different, outside other fandoms. Unless you knew people who knew people who produced zines, you couldn't get them. Actors often resented it (if they knew about it) and slash fandom was a culture of secrecy. Now we have canonical slash, actors who slash themselves in interviews, and jokes about it in the New York Times.

It's much more comfortable world.

I knew you watched House, and I think lunacy-gal does, too.

My sympathies, [livejournal.com profile] trialia.

I watch House, too, but here in the States they've been showing teasers for the season premiere for weeks. So you didn't spoil anything for me, [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako. I'm kind of looking forward to watching Wilson attempt to develop a backbone [g].

I'm glad I didn't spoil anything for it. It's confusing to keep track of what's been shown, and where - especially when you don't even know what season a show is in or what the storyline is about.

Well, like I said, I'm really regretting not having done the whole Dr. Who/Torchwood thing in order. But as far as current American TV series are concerned, I really don't have much choice [g]. Which is probably just as well.

I would recommend watching Torchwood series 2 in order if you can - especially the episodes "Reset", "Dead Man Walking" and "A Day in the Death" - I'm not sure how much sense they would make out of order. And then "Fragments" sort of sets up the action of "Exit Wounds".

On the other hand, the order in which you watch the episodes of Torchwood really doesn't matter all that much. Each is mostly self-contained in terms of plot.

Okay, you're confusing me. Am I supposed to watch Torchwood in order or not? [eg]

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Oops - yes, that was confusing, wasn't it? I'm saying that order doesn't really matter *except that* there are two story-arcs that would make most sense in order - the Reset/Dead Man Walking/A Day in the Death being one, and Fragments/Exit Wounds the other.

Ah. Got it. I'll probably watch Season 2 in order, anyway, since I can.

Personally, what with this being election year in the US I think the writers on Heroes have missed an opportunity if they're not planning to mine the Petrelli angle for all it's worth in terms of the dark side of the Kennedys as it were. And if they're focusing on Maya then that means Sylar and that would make sense to me in a season where heroes are supposed to become villains and vice versa.

When does the new season air? I have a [livejournal.com profile] save_nathan fic - post shooting - that I should have finished yesteryear.

I will be watching - I thought S2 was terribly weak in comparison to S1 and S3 will slide further no doubt, but the writerly claim is that the series as a whole will work cohesively (in a novelesque way) once all the seasons have played out and, though I don't believe them I'm curious to see them try to pull it off.

And... sigh... this is just what I don't want to see. I was looking forward to the season till I started hearing this sort of thing.

I think the new season begins Sept. 22. Yes, Sept. 22 (http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/).

though I don't believe them I'm curious to see them try to pull it off.

Part of me feels that way, and is curious. And there are enough characters I care about - Petrellis and Bennets - that I want to see them. On the other hand, I don't want to see them villainized or ruined, and the rest of it - Mohinder and Maya, the return of Sylar, even if he turns good - is really stuff I don't want to see.

Yes, of course I will watch, at least for a few weeks. I live in hope. I know how foolish it is to judge a show before it even airs.

Personally, I wish they'd strip the show down to the Bennets and the Petrellis, and only bring others in on a recurring basis, like The X-Files. The XF model makes more sense, since the B & P families have had the only interesting narratives from the beginning. But, that will never happen.

I think the Petrellis and the Bennets have become more interesting because we got to know them better; more attention was given to them and the actors got more of a chance to get into the characters. I have long been annoyed by the lack of development given to the beautiful Mohinder - whom I wrote off entirely when he betrayed Bennet for the Company.

My point being: it isn't that the Bennets are intrinsically more interesting than everyone else in the show, it's that they were made more interesting. No accident.

I like the idea of having a lot of super-powered characters, some transitory, but I think we need a core group to focus on and care about. I find it hard to care about Maya.

I've been totally unimpressed with the ads for Heroes -- too violent and just not my thing at all -- but Robert Forster? He is an amazing actor, and can even shine in a movie by Quentin Tarantino. You'll have to tell me how he turns out ... and if Christopher Eccleston ever shows up again.

I don't think I've ever seen Robert Forster. I certainly hope Christopher Eccleston turns up again - I thought Claude Raines was one of the better characters on the show.

In first season, the writing was very good, and I think it was less violent. In season 2... I lost faith, to a certain extent, while still retaining love of some of the characters. Matt, for example, whom I liked at first, I'd come to hate, and then I liked him again.

I was very disappointed by Elle, the character played by Kirstin Bell, who was formerly Veronica Mars. Beautiful, talented, and wasted on a bimbette role.
