This New York Times article about current TV shows is fun. I went to it for the Torchwood mention - which is a big spoiler if you haven't seen the end of series 2 yet, and most Canadians haven't.

I was amused by their easy acceptance of slash:
HOUSE (Fox, Sept. 16) Will prime time’s most unhealthy, obsessive love affair — the one between Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) and Dr. Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) — survive the fact that House was instrumental in Wilson’s girlfriend’s death? Early episodes are inconclusive, but we all know that they’ll patch things up somehow.

I don't like the comments on Heroes at all. Sounds like more new characters (faugh) and focus on the old characters I didn't like (Maya). Ah well: gives me an excuse not to watch, when I don't have time anyway. Who am I kidding? Of course I'll watch, initially at least, if only to see how Nathan Petrelli survives - and because I want to see Peter Petrelli again.

if they're focusing on Maya then that means Sylar and that would make sense to me in a season where heroes are supposed to become villains and vice versa.

And... sigh... this is just what I don't want to see. I was looking forward to the season till I started hearing this sort of thing.

I think the new season begins Sept. 22. Yes, Sept. 22 (http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/).

though I don't believe them I'm curious to see them try to pull it off.

Part of me feels that way, and is curious. And there are enough characters I care about - Petrellis and Bennets - that I want to see them. On the other hand, I don't want to see them villainized or ruined, and the rest of it - Mohinder and Maya, the return of Sylar, even if he turns good - is really stuff I don't want to see.

Yes, of course I will watch, at least for a few weeks. I live in hope. I know how foolish it is to judge a show before it even airs.

Personally, I wish they'd strip the show down to the Bennets and the Petrellis, and only bring others in on a recurring basis, like The X-Files. The XF model makes more sense, since the B & P families have had the only interesting narratives from the beginning. But, that will never happen.

I think the Petrellis and the Bennets have become more interesting because we got to know them better; more attention was given to them and the actors got more of a chance to get into the characters. I have long been annoyed by the lack of development given to the beautiful Mohinder - whom I wrote off entirely when he betrayed Bennet for the Company.

My point being: it isn't that the Bennets are intrinsically more interesting than everyone else in the show, it's that they were made more interesting. No accident.

I like the idea of having a lot of super-powered characters, some transitory, but I think we need a core group to focus on and care about. I find it hard to care about Maya.
