To Dance (Very Slowly) With Dragons...
Jan. 8th, 2011 05:04 pmFrom this article in 'Game of Thrones':
- A representative for Martin’s publisher Random House says that, regarding George R.R. Martin’s long-long-long-long awaited fifth book in the series, Dance With Dragons, that an announcement may be coming soon...
I would consider this great news except that the release date for To Dance With Dragons (or did they change the title?) has already been annouced. Several times. It was, what... April 2008? Then September? Then 2009? And then they were embarrassed to say anything about it? And heck, Martin said it was already half written back in 2006...
- (the fact he’s at press tour is interesting in itself … perhaps the publisher just employs a guy to follow Martin around urging him to finish the damn book already)
In which case, the ploy has clearly not worked!
The Back-up Plan...
Jan. 8th, 2011 10:33 pmThe Back-up Plan is a romantic comedy with Alex O'Loughlin, which Marion and Vicky brought over this afternoon. Enjoyable, but the plot is slight: I kept wanting to give the two protagonists a shake and tell them to talk to each other. Most of the jokes are about babies and parenthood. I kept hoping for a strong climax or a bit more depth, but hey, no need for that... And Jennifer Lopez as the female lead wore some of the ugliest clothes I've ever seen in a movie, I think. Each outfit worse than the last.
Though billed as a romantic comedy, I think I'd reclassify it as a domestic comedy. Zoe and Stan were together through much of the movie, and though there was doubt as to whether they'd stay together, the whole focus was on the implications of pregnancy, and how they'd cope with being parents.
We also watched Moonlight 1x04 ("Fever") over again, because we liked it.
The Eighth of January...
Jan. 8th, 2011 10:56 pmMy father was born on this day in 1919. He's be 92 if he were still alive. I don't remember ever actually celebrating his birthday when he was around - he wouldn't have wanted it. But I do remember that for many years I got sick on his birthday - usually with some dire flu that had me sick, miserable and feverish in bed for a week or two. I came to dread the day. I think it happened because of the combination of Christmas activity and extreme winter cold.
And now, every year I reach my father's birthday without having come down with something, I consider it a major triumph.
This year? I feel good. I hope this lasts.
