fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Jack/Rose)

Yesterday [personal profile] commodorified and [personal profile] random introduced me to the vids along the them of Where the hell is Matt? by Matt Harding. Lovely stuff.

Today I found What travelling around the world looks like in 1 minute, on a similar theme, and even more beautiful.

Pim found this: Merry Fringemas.

Love the logo with Gene in a wreath!

I love it that people are making trailers for books now. And for some of my favourites:

The Megan Whalen Turner books:

  • The Thief - brilliant, here, to make a trailer that honestly explains what the book is about, without giving spoilers - except the hint in the final line, "No one is what he seems." I can never think of anything to say about this book that isn't a spoiler - except maybe, "it's really good". Even the name of the hero - !

  • A Conspiracy of Kings

But there's nothing for the two books between them?

There's also a rather delightful and ingenious fan trailer for The Thief, and one for The Queen of Attolia. So inventive and evocative.

There's talk of making a trailer vid for the Dorothy Dunnett novels. I hope to see it.

  • Vid fun...

A friend on the Bujold list posted this link which delighted me, especially Neil Gaiman's bit. Then this led to to:

    this

Even though I am not (usually) a fan of xkcd (gasp! shock!). But I adore the swordplay bit. And the map of the whole world.

[livejournal.com profile] aeron_lanart has pointed me to the best Boom Da Yada vid of all: here. In which I am not ashamed to admit that my favourite moment is Captain Jack saying "I love real dirty things" in a moment that, out of context (or even in context) must be the porniest clip from a children's show ever.

    Kings Firecrackers.

So how many impossible things can you do before breakfast?

    Info on them.

    fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Jack/Doctor)

Now, why didn't I think of this? The John Barrowman song What about Us is perfect for a Jack/Doctor vid, and goodness knows my favourite slash pairing in Doctor Who/Torchwood doesn't get a lot of vids. (Yeah, what about us Jack/Doctor fans?)

So I'm thrilled to see that 0x3mmix0 has done it: a Jack/Doctor version of What About Us.

    Makes me a happy fan.

    fajrdrako: ([Torchwood] - Captain Jack)

Browsing Torchwood vids on YouTube, I just discovered this deleted scene from "Meat" - sexy and hilarious. A brilliant Ianto moment! "Who do you reckon would win?"

    Heh.

I joined the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Ottawa today, and had my first lesson.

    It was very cool.

Our teacher is about twenty, a student named Jessica. There are about eight in the class, a variety of ages and types - though only one man. The class took an hour, and was pretty intense. Good, though. And not quite as difficult as I feared.

I'm doing it with Beulah, so I have an ally. We came back to my place and visited [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and Yolande, and I showed them some music vids from Vividcom, especially ones from fandoms we know and love - Doctor Who (the one I linked to earlier today), Torchwood, and, particularly, Slings and Arrows, which [livejournal.com profile] maaseru, Beulah and I love, but which Yolande has never seen.

Last night I was able to have another fannish evening with [livejournal.com profile] commodorified, [livejournal.com profile] auriaephiala, [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze, and Shelley, whom I've been wanting to have over for about twenty-five years. Better late than never.

The highlight of the evening was watching three music vids from the DVD that [livejournal.com profile] commodorified brought back from Vividcon. We started out with a Torchwood vid, which was good, and a vid based on The Right Stuff, which was terrific, and a Doctor Who vid that just might be my favourite vid ever. It's made by Seah and Margie, done to the song "Handlebars" by Flobot, and you can find it here, you lucky people. What I loved most - besides the good editing and the thought that went into it - was the way they take the themes of Doctor Who, put them together in a way that looks all light and fluffy and cleverly funny, and then you realize that it isn't that way at all.

    Just like the show.

We also watched an episode of Due South, "Heaven and Earth". It's been a while. For each of the last Due South episodes I've seen, I've thought they were getting better all the time. And so they are.

This vid made me laugh. "Because Jack/Everyone is canon...."

This made me laugh in delight. Oooh, that TARDIS.

One of the things I love about Doctor Who and Torchwood fandom is the music vids.

There were some brilliant vids in Horatio Hornblower fandom, and I have some old favourites from The Professionals, but it isn't an aspect of fandom I participate in - I just appreciate the good vids when I find them. That used to be a matter of going to conventions, or sharing CDs by mail with other fans, but thanks to new web venues like Megauploads and YouTube, it's vid heaven.

At least for this Doctor Who and Torchwood fan. There seem to be three types of vid: the ones where I can't tolerate the music; the ones that seem to have no point; and the others, the beautiful, clever, well-crafted ones that make me laugh and pull me in and sometimes break my heart. In Torchwood fandom, it's a bonus when the vid is done to a John Barrowman song. Dare I ask vidders of the world for more of that? Pleae? Begging you on bended knee?

This rambling is all a prelude to a recommendation of [livejournal.com profile] emiloy's new Jack/Doctor vid to Vicki Carr's version of I will wait for you, which... well, thematically and musically, it's just as right as it can be and it still breaks my heart.

I made lentil soup. I can almost smell it through the sensory deprivation of my congestion. Nice. I don't usually think of lentil soup as exciting, but my standards this week are minimal.

The big thrill of the day was make a sortie to Costco to buy chicken for supper. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi, who is as sick as I am (but with a slightly different virus), came with me and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru. We bought almost nothing. I ate a hot dog - I love Costco hot dogs - and I could even mostly taste it. It was delicious. Then we shared some vanilla ice cream - one serving split three ways - it was really too much for me but I could actually taste the cream and that was great. One of these days I'll be back to real food.

Costco ice cream is a substance that terrifies me. Something that delicious must be demonic.

I was griping yesterday that even if you don't eat anything but chicken broth for four days because you're sick, you don't lose weight because you're expending no energy either. Why is it that sinking into the sofa and watching Torchwood isn't an aerobic activity? I got a nice surprise when I weighed myself today, though - I've lost five pounds. And that's despite a few Christmas treats over the past few weeks, like that Belgian chocolate that Sherwin gave me that kept ambushing me so ruthlessly at work. I hope everyone else has finished it off by the time I get back to work tomorrow - not that I'm in any state to approach it just now, but, alas, my appetite is bound to return some time.

The weight loss makes me feel a little better about having done no exercises since last Monday. And no, crawling slowly to the bathroom every once in a while doesn't count, either.

I did dance today: one of my many New Year's Resolutions, to dance every day, has been unfulfilled because I wasn't feeling well. For an obvious reason, the tune of A Nightingale Sang in Berekely Square wouldn't leave my head, so I gave into temptation and started playing [livejournal.com profile] dawn_e_h's beautiful music vid version of it while dancing around the living room.

    I feel happy.

And speaking of music vids based on "Captain Jack Harkness", I quite liked this one by [livejournal.com profile] spankmonkeyjack. Different. Somewaht... ironic. Sets up an interesting and disconcerting cognitive dissonance in my mind because the Torchwood imagery and theme is so much the opposite of homophobic.

I was reading A Hand in a Jar again, finding myself with a strange love of Torchwood handfics. I thought I'd already recced it but don't see it among my earlier listings.
