Browsing Torchwood vids on YouTube, I just discovered this deleted scene from "Meat" - sexy and hilarious. A brilliant Ianto moment! "Who do you reckon would win?"
Now I'm watching stuff on youtube (Ianto and Jack's first meeting - Ianto gets off on Jack's coat, heh). lordie, but I miss Ianto, I just wish the show as a whole worked better for me. And ... Jack just doesn't do it for me. No, John Barrowman doesn't do it for me. Alas.
But it's amazing: I've never seen anything on TV which had so many of the things I like about the better kind of slash fic. Some fluff, humor, basically egalitarian with hints of unstable power dynamics, well-dressed men, angst in their pasts and maybe a little between them, bisexuality ...
I've been enjoying looking at these things. Such fun. Ianto certainly has great moments! I find it somewhat embarrassing that here's this show that gives me the slash on a platter, and there are many relationships in the show I prefer to Jack/Ianto. But Jack/Ianto is great, too, with so many telling moments - and sexy moments.
Ianto and Jack's first meeting - Ianto gets off on Jack's coat, heh
I love that. And it ties in so nicely the moment in "End of Days" when Ianto is holding Jack's coat and crying over it.
I've never seen anything on TV which had so many of the things I like about the better kind of slash fic.
What is slash became canon? What if fic writers were screenwriters? They're giving it all to us.
I do think that my favorite thing about that is it's another brief glimmer of Ianto's youth showing through. Although, while the Dirty Harry joke was funny, another James Bond set-up would have been hysterical :D
Also, GDL is so good with Ianto on a non-verbal level. His twitchy hands and stutter as he rushes to change topics away from being caught goofing off to another target Jack's sure to be madder at XD Too funny! I wish it had stayed in, if only to balance out all the extreme Jack/Gwen in that episode~
Oh yes yes :D I wish they had left it in merely for the sexiness-factor but alas, we were denied and had to scrape it off the cutting room floor! I think there was also a story from that episode that GDL likes to tell, in which he got nagged at by the director for 'camping it up' by having Ianto feed Jack some of the pizza they were eating earlier in the episode (the scene with Ianto and his oversized napkin bib and Gwen heading off to go talk to Rhys).
Oh even if that was all Barrowman's crack-ideas that then GDL gets blamed for... would have LOVED to have seen that!!
I wish they had left it in merely for the sexiness-factor
I can't get enough of that.
we were denied and had to scrape it off the cutting room floor!
Any form is better than none.

Oooh. Excuse me, but that is magnificently sexy. What a great image! My main problem with Jack/Ianto is that they are too formal with each other most of the time, not nearly intimate enough. (Just compare them to Gwen and Rhys together.)

My main problem with Jack/Ianto is that they are too formal with each other most of the time, not nearly intimate enough. (Just compare them to Gwen and Rhys together.)
You put it perfectly! My kingdom for a shot of them napping in between weevil expeditions on the lumpy couch together!! I felt entirely cheated that in the finale of season 2 we got the panoramic shots of Cardiff, Gwen mourning with Rhys, but nothing from the others. It would have been a wonderful comparison to Gwen mourning to see Ianto and Jack a)feel something and b)help each other out together as this magnificent couple we've been told that they are. Its my one real big issue, we're TOLD a lot of things and only get shown the occasional bit of physical affection (not that I mind, don't take them away, BBC!).
We hear them flirt, smirk, say all these innuendo laden things but we barely see them in a context of just quiet moments together as a 'couple' might. Now maybe that is because they're in this physical only relationship but we know for a fact from the episodes, and also the heavy handed notions from the books too that Ianto is most likely utterly in love but in some sense of self-preservation denial of it. I know we're only getting five episodes in 2009, but I wish they'd address that lack of emotional connection (Ianto in Almost Perfect being terrified of Jack using the 'L-word') especially as to what the viewer sees. Non-internet exploring fans who don't know the Captain's Log or just fandom notions in general are missing out on a large portion of well, what are assumptions as to -at the very least- Jack's side of the relationship. Which, considering he's the supposed main character of the show, I feel is a bit unfortunate. But we know from Adam in his 'what defines you' moment, that Ianto is a person that sees himself through others eyes. His heavy emotional investment in Lisa, his putting his post-cyberwoman self into Jack's hands -both figurative and literal- has been played out so off-camera that I think it does make me think them having that spark of connection in 'Fragments' on the warehouse room floor a million times better than the random groping in the Hot house in 'Adrift'.
.... Not that I didn't like that scene in 'Adrift' :D And oh my, I rambled like whoa, sorry about that!
them having that spark of connection in 'Fragments' on the warehouse room floor a million times better than the random groping in the Hot house in 'Adrift'.
Oh Lord YES. That brief spark-- and Ianto's horror, denial, confusion, shame, whatever it was-- was unbelievably sexy and potent with possibility. The hothouse scene was just a sex scene. (Though I wouldn't call it "random" groping: looked liked Ianto was right on target! ;-) )
Oh Lord YES. That brief spark-- and Ianto's horror, denial, confusion, shame, whatever it was-- was unbelievably sexy and potent with possibility.
It was one of the better Jack/Ianto interactions. We had the banter, we had the sense of connection, we had the reactions - all fitting perfectly into plot and theme.
The hothouse scene was great fun but should have been IMHO a little more sensual - I don't think it was random groping, though, I think we caught them at a specific and rather goal-oriented moment, so rudely (but delightfully) interrupted by Gwen.
My kingdom for a shot of them napping in between weevil expeditions on the lumpy couch together!!
Wouldn't that be cute?
It would have been a wonderful comparison to Gwen mourning to see Ianto and Jack a)feel something and b)help each other out together as this magnificent couple we've been told that they are.
I agree. The result is that I still don't know what to make of them. They have such potential, but what do they actually have? I felt we learned more about Ianto's attitude to Jack in his brief conversation with Martha in "Reset" than we'd had all along. It came as a surprise to me to see how playful he was about the relationship there and in "Adrift", when other clues (in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Adam") had given a different impression.
I rather loved it in series 1 when he usually called Jack "sir" even though they were sleeping together. I thought that added a touch of edginess or even kinkiness to their play that was quite delightful, and I was sorry he stopped doing that.
Anyway, if Jack is the main character of the show, and I think he's supposed to be, then we should know more about his primary sexual relationship - especially when his boyfriend is also a part of the Torchwood team. We know, for example, that Ianto likes James Bond - do he and Jack watch movies together? It would appear not, on the evidence of "From Out of the Rain".
Contradictions all over the place, and not many clear indications that I can see. So much ambiguity.
I know some fans read it differently.
we barely see them in a context of just quiet moments together as a 'couple' might.
I would put that down to Ianto being shy in company but it doesn't work out that way: he's just as distant with Jack (sometimes) when they are alone together. Even if they are talking about work-related issues, I'd like to see some hand-holding or warm glances or the kind of awareness of each other that lovers have.
Now maybe that is because they're in this physical only relationship but we know for a fact from the episodes, and also the heavy handed notions from the books too that Ianto is most likely utterly in love but in some sense of self-preservation denial of it.
That works what we've seen, but not always. (For instance, the moment when Ianto said Jack gave his life meaning in "Adam".)
Ianto in Almost Perfect being terrified of Jack using the 'L-word'
I loved that, and it worked nicely for the novel.
Non-internet exploring fans who don't know the Captain's Log or just fandom notions in general are missing out on a large portion of well, what are assumptions as to -at the very least- Jack's side of the relationship.
Yes. And so much of the best of it seems to be from the off-screen sources - the novels, the Captain's Log, the remarks of the actors.
I liked the scene in "Adrift" too, but it didn't add to my self of their relationship. I'd have liked it better if it had been slower, longer, from their point of view rather than Gwen's, and... well. I'm happy with what we get. Really.
I'd like to see something between Jack and Ianto that has, to my eyes, the same emotional resonance as between Jack and Jack in "Captain Jack Harkness" or between Jack and the Doctor in "Boom Town". I want to see a sense of emotional connection between them even more than I want to see sex between them. (Though I don't mind the sex and would like more of it.)
And I don't even care if the relationship between them is purely sex because the Jack/Ianto relationship isn't the one I am heavily invested in. That being said, I wish I was. I wish I saw more frission to it.
I think what I feel lacking is 'consistent characterization of Ianto and Jack through the whole series', and I don't think we're getting it. Not just in relationship to each other, though that's the part I most care about. Just... in general.
Hello! I noticed you're watching my comm, sexy_mood_music, but you haven't joined. I wanted to let you know that you must join to see any graphics. Well, that's it. Take care. :)

I love it that he likes Dirty Harry too - ! It explains some of his skills.

Yes, he's very good at that.

I like the Gwen/Jack stuff, but they never give us enough about Ianto, so it's wonderful to see, and I wish it had been in the episode, too.
Besides, it was sexy.
