fajrdrako: ([Smallville])

In early years of Smallville, I was crazy over the show. I read a lot of Clark/Lex fic, I wrote a lot of Clark/Lex fic, and I was a happy fan. I was mad over sexy Lex Luthor and his scary father Lionel. I loved Chloe.

But the show changed, and I couldn't bear the changes in Lex, and hated some of the new characters so much I couldn't bear to see them, so I slipped away into Doctor Who and Torchwood fandom, scared to watch Smallville as it had become.

But [livejournal.com profile] maaseru really likes Michael Shanks, so we sat down tonight with [livejournal.com profile] explodedteabag to watch the Smallville episode in which he appears as Carter Hall, Hawkman.

Now, I'm not nearly as much a fan of DC comics, and my knowledge of DC comics is spotty. I know some of the Justice Society characters - certainly the original Sand Man, Doctor Fate, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter, though I don't recall ever coming across Stargirl before. I know enough to barely recognize (with glee) Amanda Waller, and mutter comments about Jay Garrick.

What fun to see them. And Green Arrow! I'd only seen clips of this Oliver Queen before. He doesn't have much charm, but he's quite gorgeous.

There was a young man who got onto the bus I was on, who looked uncommonly like Tom Welling. He was, at a guess, 17 or 18. Not identical to Welling; his nose was a little sharper, his hair shorter, his eyes bigger and more blue. His shoulders and biceps were proportionately large. Probably a football player.

I tried not to stare.

Really, you don't see people like that on Ottawa buses very often.

[livejournal.com profile] acampbell and others have been urging me to sign the "Kill the Clana" petition. (Have I mentioned how I dislike the tendency of Smallville fandom to elide all pairings into one name or word?) Well, I'm certainly no fan of Lana and she's always at her worst with Clark Kent for some reason, so I went today to the site and signed.

After signing, I noticed someone else's comment: "Clois is the way to go. Get rid of Lana!" and I had a crisis of conscience. I dislike the Clark/Lois pairing even more than I dislike the Clark/Lana pairing. I'm afraid that, short of a possible Clark/Lori Lemaris option that they aren't giving us, any deviation from Clark/Lex horrifies me. And the producers, for some perverse reason, aren't going to give us a lifetime of Clark/Lex.

If Clark/Lois is the only alternative, I think I'm sorry I signed.

My friend Pat has been a comics fan for decades - he's a DC fan, and a Green Arrow fan, and he likes Superman. So when Smallville started he and his wife Sandi watched it, but they didn't like it much and soon stopped watching. I, on the other hand, adored the show, and glommed onto it, and made it my primary fandom for - what, four years? I loved it for the Luthor Family Soap Opera, which was precisely why Sandi and Pat didn't like it. Besides, they aren't into slash and didn't even see the delightful sexiness of it all.

Now that various things on the show have quelled my passion for it, suddenly Pat and Sandi are into it and enthusiastic about it again. They love it that it has superheroes in it now. They recognize it as something more like the world of DC comics that they want, and they're watching happily. I'm watching... somewhat belatedly... with a combination of hope and cringing. I still haven't seen the past two episodes.

Funny how things change.

Pat and Sandi don't like Heroes. They love Eureka, which leaves me cold. Lucky thing they both love Doctor Who, or I'd think we had no tastes in common!
