Ever since September, Lyn has been planning to take me and Beulah out for dinner. I figured the time had come - no point waiting till 2011 - so I pushed them into finding a time (tonight) and a place: my choice - the Sala Thai restaurant on Alta Vista at Bank. I chose it because I wanted a Thai place; I was missing Sacred Gardens. And I'd never been there before. I love trying new places.

I might have liked it even more if I'd checked their website beforehand, and seen that they wished for world peace. Way to go.

It turned out to be delicious. Friendly, efficient service, a washroom on the ground floor, and refilled water glasses - what could be better?

Around noon, I went to the nutritionist again, for the end of week 2 of the programme. I've lost 4.4 pounds. (Yay!) We discussed a few things I'd been wondering, like: is stevia a good sugar substitute? Answer: yes. And should we weight our food before or after weighing it? Answer: after.

The [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and I went to Panda Garden for a disgustingly healthy lunch - steamed squid and vegetables, mostly. (Okay, I had one chicken wing. But not the kind with sauce.)

I had lots of energy today - got all my exercises done and two loads of laundry washed before going out.

After dinner, Beulah and Lyn came to my place where we exchanged Christmas presents, and watched an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - I'm so happy to know they are fans, too. It was "The Shark Affair", about the survivalist pirate. Superb! Another episode that was too early for me to have seen back when I was twelve. There were even scenes with a budgie named Sam, who spoke. I pointed it out to my little feathered guys but they weren't impressed. I suspect they thought Sam wasn't colourful enough, being in black and white.

I was wondering whether The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. is out on DVD, so I was looking for it online.

While browsing, I came across this on IMDB:

Clooney Targets "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

18 November 2010 5:06 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news ยป

Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh ("Ocean's 11") is in talks to direct Warners upcoming feature adaptation of the 1960's TV series "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", starring actor George Clooney.

The new "U.N.C.L.E." screenplay will be written by Scott Z. Burns ("The Informant") for producers John Davis and Jeff Kleeman.

The original TV series, broadcast on NBC September 1964 to January 1968, followed the exploits of two secret agents, played by actors Robert Vaughn ("The Magnificent Seven") and David McCallum ("The Great Escape") , who work for the clandestine, international law-enforcement agency 'U.N.C.L.E.' ('United Network Command for Law and Enforcement').

Presumably George Clooney is to play Napoleon Solo, or a new character as the protagonist agent.

George Clooney. I like George Clooney, though I didn't like the Ocean's 11 movies at all. Still. The Three Kings redeems him. If they take the story seriously, it might be good. If htey don't... Well. I'm still reeling from seeing the terrible Green Lantern trailer on Saturday. Spare me.

Clooney: rather too old now to be Napoleon, but I guess Napoleon ages along with all of us (except Marvel and DC heroes), and won't be thirty-three forever. And theer's no hint there of who might play Illya... Can I hope for a talented, fair-haired unknown? One good thing about having Clooney in the lead: he will probably encourage slashiness. But really, Napoleon should be in his thirties, and Clooney should be playing Alexander Waverly... Myself, I'd cast Alex O'Loughlin, I think. Off the top of my head. Unless I can think of someone better.

And if they should get that far, Kris Holden-Ried should play Mark Slade.

The item continues:
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced 105 "U.N.C.L.E." episodes, originally developed by Sam Rolfe for executive producer Norman Felton, with "James Bond" author Ian Fleming contributing characters 'Napoleon Solo' and 'April Dancer', to series scriptwriters Robert Towne ("Chinatown") and Harlan Ellison ("The City On The Edge Of Forever").
I'd forgotten Ellison wrote for it, but then, in my teens I would have had no idea who Ellison was, and cared less. And I totally disliked Chinatown, so just as well I didn't know about Towne.

I see Sam Rolfe died in 1993. He did a lot to enliven my early teens and stimulate my imagination.

While exercising this morning, I watched "The Vulcan Affair" - the first episode on the U.N.C.L.E. DVDs. I must have missed this when I first watched the series, since I didn't discover it until December and the series started in September. Exciting to think there are more U.N.C.L.E. episodes I've never seen, after all this time.

The Vulcan Affair... )

Something cool happened this evening. While doing my arm exercises during the day, I'd paused the television in the middle of watching an episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the first episode of first season, "The Vulcan Affair". It was showing the scene where the power-weapon-station is about to blow up.

So my friend Pim came in and turned on the television, and was momentarily surprised to see I'd been watching something in black and white, which I don't usually. "It looks good," she said. "It looks like Metropolis or something." Then she and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru tried to guess what it was. [livejournal.com profile] maaseru guessed, like the good U.N.C.L.E. fan that she is - the then, she knows me. Pim said she'd like to see the show - she was too young to watch it when it first came out.

Looks like I might have found myself friends to watch with.
