Today's 'quote of the day' list had two quotes I knew well, and loved, but I never knew who said them:

and

Turns out both are from Leroy "Satchel" Paige, 1906 - 1982, an American baseball player.

Such a talent, and such a great attitude. He didn't pitch in "the majors" until well into his forties, but even then he made his mark. Before that, in the Negro Leagues, he had upwards of a hundred no-hitters.

There was a very good Negro League team near Pittsburgh -- the Homestead Grays. The town of Homestead lies across the Monongahela River from, uh, Duquesne (I think). It is also known for the HOmestead STrike, in which mill workers got shot. Massively important for labor history.
