Ringers: Lord of the Fans...
May. 19th, 2008 11:04 pmThis evening, I watched the movie Ringers: Lord of the Fans with
And it was very entertaining. I'm not sure if there was anything there that I didn't already know, but it was a nice overview of how Tolkien's works have been regarded over the years. Some of it was nostalgic and some of it was funny - like Leonard Nimoy's Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.
Oh yes, there was an item I've never heard of - a place in California called Hobbiton, with a low-tech recreation of Frodo's journey.
Favourite bits: the interviews with Coleen Doran, Ian McKellen, Terry Pratchett, and David Carradine. It felt a little odd when I realized how many people in this movies I've actually met, one way or another - I should have kept a running count. This is what happens when you spend your life going to cons of one type or another.

So - congratulations. Are you going to do a sequel?

Date: 2008-05-20 02:19 pm (UTC)Sadly, I have not met Viggo Mortensen or Orlando Bloom; though I've seen Ian McKellen live. But other people in the movie - there are fans I've met at cons who were featured in the movie, and writers like Terry Pratchett whom I've talked to and heard speak at cons, and there were a few people with brief segments in the movie whom I've known for years.
Which just means I've been hanging around in fandom for a long time. But it's such fun...!
And of all the people mentioned in that movie whom I wish I'd met, I suppose J.R.R. Tolkien heads the list. I find it amazing that - back in the 1960s particularly - those books appealed to every segment of society, from the highest intelligensia to the street people. How many books has that been true of? Not very many.
