What is the funniest movie you have ever seen?

[livejournal.com profile] maaseru and I were talking about how much we laughed with Death at a Funeral, and I was saying that I don't generally watch comedies, and she was saying that I laugh out loud a lot while watching things - something I'm not exactly self-aware about doing.

So we were wondering what the funniest movies we've seen are. Not necessarily the best, but.... things that made us laugh. In and Out made the grade, and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

What else is very funny?

Recently, 'The Baker' made me howl until my sides ached.

In the past, 'Arsenic and Old Lace', 'Super Troopers', and 'A Fish Called Wanda' have always made me laugh.

The Big Lebowski

ALSO PRETTY FUNNY:

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

The Jerk (shut up)

Ed Wood

The Pink Panther

My humor brows are fairly low, as you can see.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the most recent movie to have me giggling helplessly. I think just invoking the title means I have to go watch it again.

A classic eighties comedy that I love is Clue. Yes, it's based on the board game. Yes, it's a comedy. I love it.

I think What's Up Doc? is pretty darn classic. Also, mm, Harold and Maude, UHF, The Tall Guy, Stiff Upper Lips . . . and I second the motion for Hot Fuzz. I'll probably have more if I think about it properly, though, given I definitely like comedies.

(And I totally laughted straight through Death At A Funeral. Absolutely.)

Oh, I'd forgotten about What's Up, Doc? and The Tall Guy. Thank you for reminding me. The Tall Guy has one of the most hilarious sex scenes I've ever watched in my entire life.

I adore Harold and Maude, but for some reason it's not laugh-out-loud funny for me.

Yes, you do laugh out loud when you feel it. I don't notice this much, as I enjoy your laugh so.

Hotel New Hampshire -- in places. Blazing Saddles, high praise. Silent Movie, also by Mel Brooks. Sleeper by Woody Allen. Shrek, and the second Shrek, also -- I have not seen the third one, so can't say. But the first two are wonderfully funny.

When something tickles me... Yeah. Well, that's good. I think laughing is a really good thing. Good for health and spirit.

Hotel New Hampshire - is that Neil Simon, or am I confusing it with something else?

I haven't seen the second Shrek. Funny, yes, though I'm not fond of the animation. Perhaps I should watch it with my eyes closed? No, too much of it is visual. Maybe I'll just watch.

I love "The Court Jester." The routine: "The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true . . . " is right up there with "Who's on first?" That is from the movie "The Naughty Nineties," with Abbott & Costello.

I like "Hot Fuzz," too. It's fun and witty and will never be arrested for loitering. "Kate & Leopold" is funny in its own way. But, the most quoted comedy I hear is "Monty Python's Holy Grail." It's not possible to say the word, "shrubbery" without a snickering chorus of "Ni!"

Oooh, I might have to make a list...

Ninotchka
Strictly Ballroom
anything Peter Sellers
Payback
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (I'm related to half those characters...it's like they took the Ukrainian family and the Italian family and split the difference)

And the funniest scene of all time is from the old Tom Jones movie starring Albert Finney. Squire Weston is so drunk he tangles his reins up and spins the horse around so many times it topples right over, with him on it. I have no idea how they filmed it without killing anyone, but that is my #1 hysterical, laugh till you cry movie moment.

What? No-one's mentioned any Monty Python stuff! *is gobsmacked*

Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Life of Brian are both absolutely hilarious and my two fave funniest films ever. I particularly adore the psuedo-biblical bits in the Life of Brian (the Sermon on the Mount is possibly my all time fave scene; there's just something so... *python* about 'Blessed are the Cheesemakers'.) And then there's the Knights of Ni, Tim the Enchanter, Castle Anthrax and Patsy out of the Holy Grail. Love it!

Um, quite like some of the earlier Steve Martin films - the Man With Two Brains, All of Me and the Jerk.

Nuns on the Run also makes me giggle as does Hear no Evil See no Evil.

Arsenic and Old Lace and Some Like it Hot for classic stuff

I second "Singing in the rain", "Four weddings and a funeral" and absolutely "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" which has Val Kilmer in it who can be hilariously funny! Really! Ever seen "Top Secret" with him? Not witty funny but silly funny, but one needs that sometimes!
Hm, what else...? Oh of course. "Dead men don't wear plaid", the black and white one where the PI interacts with scenes from classic movies? "Cleaning Woman" is the running gag... *lol*
And an absolutely cute romantic comedy is "Her Minor Thing", which I only saw at first because Christian Kane is in it (surprise...*lol*), but it's sweet and lovely and had me giggling the whole time.

"The Russians are Coming, The Russians are coming." Maybe you'd have to be old enough to remember the cold war, but I don't think so. We watched it with my daughter when she was about ten, I guess (which was definitely after the fall of the Soviet Union) and she also was falling off the bed laughing.
