Doctor Who: it's about what?
Jan. 28th, 2008 09:29 amI am always amused when I look at the Yahoo! TV guide listing and see Doctor Who described as "Family-oriented program about a time-traveling physician."
Um, well, yes, it is that. Sort of. But that isn't how I'd describe it. Maybe "Adventures in time and space with an unusual alien who likes humans" - so, I suppose that could imply he likes them to eat. "Travels in time and space with a well-meaning alien who doesn't quite know how to make his spaceship behave". Or... "Lonely god seeks human companionship for unexpected adventures." No, that's a personal ad, Time Lord Style.
I think I see their problem.
Anyone have some good suggestion as to how to describe Doctor Who (politely) in a sentence?

Date: 2008-01-28 04:21 pm (UTC)How about:
Family-oriented program about a time-traveling alien with a penchant for bananas, adventurous humans, and saving the Earth.

Date: 2008-01-28 04:35 pm (UTC)I think we are intended to, though there are hints of doctorliness in "The Empty Child". That being said... the Doctor is many things, and I'd never think of him as a physician in the way we'd use the word!
I've always taken the title as a joke/metaphor for the way he likes to fix things, situations, and people.... A hint at his character. Not a job description.

I like it - very much! The bananas are a particularly good touch.

Well, you know my theory as to why the Master has it in for him… the rivalry some people have about PhDs…!

I totally fail at a one sentence description though :(
