From [livejournal.com profile] angevin2: In The Song of Ice and Fire, which House do you belong to?

Your Score: House Targaryen

72% Dominant, 63% Extroverted, 54% Trustworthy

Ancient. Noble. Passionate to the point of insanity. Transcending lesser beings, you are of House Targaryen.

You are a dominant personality—in fact, you are the most dominant of all eight house types. You will not suffer yourself to be ignored. You will not suffer yourself to be ruled. The phrase "I will not suffer myself to _____!" was practically made for you. You are willful, arrogant, and exceedingly dangerous to screw with. With a temper like yours, anyone stupid enough to saunter into your line of fire won’t soon forget their mistake.

You are also extroverted, which means that everyone in the world knows exactly what your intentions are. Unlike your cohorts (who hide behind smiles and courtesies and court politics), you think of it as your birthright to come riding in on an enormous dragon, breathing fire and fucking your siblings. Hey, what you lack in subtlty, you make up in style!

Finally, you are trustworthy. Your absurd amounts of power and borderline psychosis are not used unjustly. Unlike many, your general aims are just and true. You were bred for rule, and the fact that you cannot rest until you are doing so is not your fault. If you make up your mind, it becomes reality. Never one for empty threats or vainglorious lies, you can only speak the truth. And the truth is "fire and blood."

Representative characters include: Daenerys Stormborn, Rhaegar Targaryen, and Viserys Targaryen

Similar Houses: Baratheon, Lannister,and Tully

Opposite House: Frey

When playing the game of thrones, you play it to the death.

Best line: "You will not suffer yourself to be ruled. The phrase "I will not suffer myself to _____!" was practically made for you. It was my favourite of the families. No, I don't have a temper and I don't annihilate my enemies by training my dragons to incinerate them, but... I might. I just might.

Just call me Dani. Or Rhaegar. Not Viserys, please.

Your Score: House Lannister

54% Dominant, 45% Extroverted, 54% Trustworthy

Image

Confident. Dangerous. Unrelentingly sexy. The master of all you survey, you are of House Lannister.

You are a dominant personality—and how! When someone asks “and who are you, the proud lord said, that I should bow so low?” your response is probably, “FUCK YOU! I’m a fucking LANNISTER, that’s who the HELL I am!” And then you’d pimp-slap them with your golden hand. All joking aside, you view leadership as your natural, god-given right; it is a trait, just like your golden curling hair and irresistible sex appeal. It’s who you are—a Lannister.

You are introverted, meaning that you prefer to keep your ambitions and devices to yourself. Unfortunately, your personality is so vivacious that (despite all your intended secrecies) you are still a very obvious person. Though no one knows what avenues you will travel, your destination is clear to all. And of course, yours is a road to greatness! You have a magnetic, polarizing personality: people either love you or hate you. They also probably find you exceedingly intimidating. Their fear is probably well-placed.

Finally, you are trustworthy. Does this surprise you? Remember your unofficial motto: “A Lannister always pays his debts.” Though you enjoy keeping secrets and playing games, everyone knows you are a major player. Underhanded tactics are so expected from you that they don’t particularly count as untrustworthyness—it’s more of a family legacy than a choice. Your promise is as good as the gold that you shit.

Representative characters include: Tyrion Lannister, Jaime Lannister, and Tywin Lannister

Similar Houses: Greyjoy, Stark, and Targaryen

Opposite House: Tyrell

When playing the game of thrones, you play it balls to the wall.

Eeee! Well, at least the Lannisters are beautiful. Well... some of them. Tyrion (whom I adore) isn't. But Jaime and Cersei - gorgeous.

I wonder what the books have in store for Lannisters. I wonder if any will survive.

So. Roar away.

(Don't the Targaryens have a motto? I guess not - I don't recall one, and there isn't one with my quiz answer. Maybe their motto is "we're so aristocratic we don't need no fucking motto".

Oh, in the George R.R. Martin books, it's all bad, when it isn't even worse than bad. There is at least one sympathetic character in each family - sometimes two, but if there's more than one, chances are that the other is going to be mutilated and tortured to death in darkest despair after betraying (or being betrayed by) their dearest and only love.

These are very good books but they aren't exactly cheerful.

Among the Lannisters, I love both Tyrion and Jaime. Tyrion is a dwarf. His brother Jaime is a beautiful, powerful knight motivated to child-murder by his incestuous passion for his power-hungry sister. (This isn't much of a spoiler, we learn this near the beginning of the first book. Jaime just gets more interesting as the story continues.)

Among the Targaryens, the whole family was wiped out but the only surviving offspring, Danaerys, owns the only remaining dragons in existence, and is busy conquering the world with an army of freed slaves. Her father Rhaegar, long dead, was rather glamorous, and had a mysterious past that is still mysterious and being revealed in tantalizingly tiny bits. His father was a raving pyromaniac who killed a lot of people, including the scion of House Stark, which caused the civil war that happened about fifteen years before the first book starts. (Not to be confused with the civil war that starts after the first book starts.)

House Stark started out looking good, as the patriarch, Eddard Stark, was honest and brave and true. If we had known before we started reading what kind of books these are, we would have realized how disastrous that was. Eddard Stark had a whole bunch of offspring, and a lot of the story is spent following their adventures and misadventures. One of the best and most sympathetic characters is Eddard's bastard son Jon Snow. Some of us think/hope that Jon and Danaerys will survive and eventually get together to found a new combined dynasty. There's a big mystery about who Jon's mother was.

The others? House Frey is creepy and squicky, total skin-crawling scum. I don't trust House Tully an inch, though one of them seems okay. House Greyjoy makes House Frey look good. House Baratheon is... uh, either drunk, deposed or extinct. Maybe all three. (I pause to consider which Baratheons, if any, are alive. Right. Depends how you compute some rather iffy parentage.) Maybe there'll be a comeback, though, there's a Baratheon bastard wandering around who still hasn't been murdered, despite a few death squads sent after him. I think he doesn't know who he really is.

There are a couple of other interesting Houses not represented on the quiz, like House Tyrell and House Martell of Dorne.

This is no doubt way, way more than you wanted to hear, but I can't help it, I'm a fan, and you gave me an opening.

Soapy?

That surprises me. Yes, I guess, if you look at the storyline, it is sort of soapy, but it doesn't feel like that while you're reading. Maybe because there are a lot of points of view. Maybe because the settings are varied and important. Mostly because the style is very un-soapy. So things take you by surprise as you read.

I love that icon!

...If you look at the plot of most of my fave things, it looks soapy - Buffy looks like the soap from hell.

And it is. In some ways. But obviously, the quality and genre are completely different.

On my car ride home from Stratford, my friends were listening to these books on audio tape and trying to explain the story to me. I was so cornfused and it didn't sound very cheery.

It probably wouldn't be confusing if you were reading it, rather than listening to it.

It is very complex.

It is not cheery at all. Things just get worse and worse. But in interesting ways. I wouldn't want to stop reading. Even though I didn't like the fourth book much - not nearly as much as the first three. My favourite characters were missing, and the story didn't seem to advance much.

The big problem with the series is that George R.R. Martin is writing it very, very slowly, and the more he writes, the longer it gets, so we begin to fear it will never ever be finished.

I have wanted to read this for a while, but haven't gotten to it yet.

It was confusing because my friends were explaining several books to me (they were listening to the most recent one). I find it difficult to understand stories sometimes when people summarize them. hah.

I can imagine. Summarizing a story of that scope.... It would be like summarizing 45 years of X-Men while just looking at one issue. A Feast for Crows (the most recent book) would make it even more confusing, because a lot of the viewpoints and stories are of completely different settings than the other books, and characters who are central to the other books (like Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, and Dani) are completely missing.

Yes and they were telling me who had died and who's pov which chapter was from and I was like I'M NOT GOING TO REMEMBER ANY OF THIS SO JUST DRIVE. :)

I ignored it the whole way and thought about Eden.

I wish more writers were more careful about editing. This applies to everything from fanfic to J.K. Rowling and major works of non-fiction.

Yeah, it's very tough. There's something to inspired writing but also to reading it over and over like a reader would. The hardest part is finding things that don't work and having to work it out again. And continuation issues.

I spent years doing just that during undergrad. I had no inspiration to write at the time, but I thought about the story constantly.

I always say, my goal isn't necessarily publication. It would be nice, but even if it wasn't with Eden, Eden is the story I will always obsess about in my mind. It will always be the story w/ the characters that live in my mind. Kind of like a past life I can't forget. Like real memories.

That's all I really want out of writing. A lot of non-writers don't understand that. For them, it's all about getting published.

Yes. I get the same with fanfic. People who don't understand why I would do it if not for money. Or why I would value it, because they don't.

Indeed. I have no illusions about making a living as a writer. I will try to publish one day, but for the sake of being published. If not, I will continue to write for the love of it.

That's why I went into the library field. I can work and still have time to write. And of course, the resources.
