On the bus this morning, I realized that in my list of "The Ten Best Lines of Captain Jack Harkness", I left off my two favourites. Since this oversight has to be rectified, I will now extend my list to "The Twelve Best Lines of Captain Jack Harkness". The missing lines:

2. "See you in hell." (Parting of the Ways) Classic action-hero line. I always hoped he would say it in Torchwood; he never did. He should have said it to Gwen before he went to face Abaddon in "End of Days".

1. "Never doubted him. Never will." (Parting of the Ways) The perfect statement of faith!

Yes! I thought there was another precious one from DW... (See you in hell, I mean)

"Do I look like an off-limits kind of guy?" (I think this one was in Bad Wolf)

"Do I look like an off-limits kind of guy?"

Oh, yes. Brilliant! And still applicable - more than ever!

I can just imagine him showing off his two big guns, spreading his hands holding them...

Actually, since I typed the quote, I can't stop imagining that.

Oooh. Such a nice mental image.

I wish I could sit and watch all day... But I guess remembering and imagining is the next best thing.

I always figured the not saying it had to be significant. Because he's not going anywhere, hell included.

Maybe that's it.

I was relating it more to his changed personal style... He has lost a lot of his bravado. He's trying to play a role of responsibility, which wears him down. He's less likely to challenge fate.

He should have said it to Gwen before he went to face Abaddon in "End of Days".

Well... assuming he expected to see Gwen (or Rose) there.
The Doctor is quite another thing.

Depending on how literally you want to take it!

Good point.

I did take it quite literally. Jack does not expect to survive this. He doesn't expect any of them to ("you sent her home!" - and he is relieved).

I don't think Jack expected to survive battle with the Daleks, either. And he didn't. We're just lucky that Rose interfered with the fabric of reality.

I don't think Jack expected anyone to survive, though he thought that if anyone could save the situation, it was the Doctor. Even if he died doing so.

Nonetheless... I'm not convinced that Jack, even at that point, believed in a literal hell, or thought he would go there, or that the Doctor would. I think the statement - more of a slogan, really - was a bit of cheeky defiance, indicating that he was not afraid of anything, and ready to face any fate.
