Yesterday was a red letter day, when it comes to mail. I had, over the past six months or so, ordered a number of things from amazon.ca, and most of it was delayed in arriving in Canada, so the shipping dates kept being pushed back. And then it all came at once, in the past two days. Not to mention stuff from friends. So now I have:
  • The series 2 Doctor Who DVD

  • Torchwood Border Princes by Dan Abnett

  • Torchwood Slow Decay by Andrew Lane

  • The Doctor Who Annual 2007, which thrilled me by having both David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston on the cover - I had no idea, the pictures I'd seen just showed Tennant.

  • The SFX Magazine with the Torchwood 'badges' from [livejournal.com profile] silverwhistle. I took this up to [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's place and she and I and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi perused this and the Forbidden Planet catalogue for about an hour. I kept coming to a dead halt when I came to a certain beautiful figure of Faramir in the middle of the Forbidden Planet catalogue, but we were also all charmed by a lovely replica of Mal Reynold's gun, carefully detailed and hand-polished. "By Nathan Filion himself!" we chortled. And a TARDIS pencil-case. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi made me promise to bring back the SFX Magazine later because there are so many good movie and TV reviews in it. Not to mention a scrummy picture of Jamie Bamber. Thank you again, [livejournal.com profile] silverwhistle, this is a wonderful gift.

Мm. I can so imagine getting stuck on a beautiful figure of Faramir... whatever I'm doing. Never mind the amount of distraction I'm dealing with today... :D Oh well. At least I got somebody else hooked on JB videos on youtube. Talking about guilty pleasures...

Yes. I was happily reading the catalogue and then came to a dead halt when I saw him. I don't think I've read the rest of it even yet. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi admired it just as I did. Then when [livejournal.com profile] maaseru was reading the catalogue she stopped and exclaimed at exactly the same picture. We likes it, precious, we likes it.

At least I got somebody else hooked on JB videos on youtube.

It's a constant temptation, I tell you. I know they're there and they call to me.

Talking about guilty pleasures...

I have only too many of those.

I've ordered the Boromir doll, but he hasn't arrived yet... He's going to get a bit of a makeover, anyway... ;-D

Yes.
I painted the shield and helm on my Knight of Outremer doll to be his big brother (since he has a sword).

I have a bag of lovely fabric bits, including some lightweight brocade-y type stuff. I'm sure I can make a nice bliaut...

This is Guilhem Longa-Espia:

I also have the Iseult Barbie (blonde) and a Juliet (brunette, dressed in the Guenevere costume) as the 2 Queens.

Handsome devil. Good sartorial choices, too. I look forward to a photo of Conrad.

Have you photos of Yseult and Juliet?

Not yet... This is the official photo of the Iseult doll (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000302AHS?vi=pictures): I swapped her circlet for one with points to make her into Sibylla. If you click on the picture, you can bring up closer views of her.

This is the Juliet doll (http://www.mesbarbies.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=100) (I got her on her own, not with Romeo). Lucrezia Borgia (the pale blonde Romance Novel Barbie - strikingly like poor Lucy!) tends to borrow her original outfit, and the Italian Renaissance princess one (which is dark blue). As Isabella, she wears this pale blue, gold and white outfit (http://www.dazzlingdolls.com/barbie/dazzling.html?197).

Excellent news! I've just finished watching DW season 2 and it's brilliant fun. I bought a copy of SFX the other day but got the DW badges, not the Torchwood ones. Didn't realise they'd done the other set until I got it home *curses*

What do the DW badges look like? This set has a Jack (yay!), a Gwen, a Weevil (I kinda like that one!) and a Torchwood symbol.

It's up to you to decide if it's Janet or Brad...

I may change my mind on that, on alternate days. Jack can judge Weevil gender but I can't!

Given Jack's colourful past, I'm sure he's learned the genders of numerous unusual species!

Date: 2007-02-08 06:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Yup, 'colourful' is his middle name. (Cognate with 'flexible', you know.) I'm sure this is also true for other androgynous/hermaphrodite versions.

And joking aside, I think Jack would really have to have a good general knowledge of xenobiology - even if it's just a streetwise version, it would have been necessary for his survival.

There's one Doctor with Martha, a K9 (cute!), a Cyberman with a hand stretching out towards you and a TARDIS.

The funniest part - there's a warning on the back saying Not suitable for children!

Date: 2007-02-07 07:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Not suitable for children!

That's downright strange! Maybe they think a child might swallow them? Or stick himself with the pin?

So the Doctor doesn't get a badge all to himself?

Date: 2007-02-07 07:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] firko.livejournal.com
No, no single Doctor badge :(

I suppose they are trying to get everyone on board with Martha as the new assistant. Rose is a pretty hard act to follow.

Date: 2007-02-07 07:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
It's very true that they want to give Martha exposure (which is fine by me) and that Rose is a hard act to follow. But if I were designing the badges, I'd skip K9 and give the Doctor his solo badge.

But then I'm biased... any chance to see the Doctor will do!

Yay for season 2 DW! So the Torchwood books are worth reading? And what do you think of the Annual? I was tempted but with so many other things I want...

the Forbidden Planet catalogue

Heh, what would you say if I told you that I already know where the Forbidden Planet is in Edinburgh? ;D

So the Torchwood books are worth reading?

On the strength of being not quite halfway through the first one, I'd say 'yes'. Very much so. Stand by for further revelations about them as I read.

what do you think of the Annual? I was tempted

Yeah. I was tempted and gave into the temptation. And I can't say I'm sorry, if only for a number of pretty pictures of David Tennant. But you have to put up with pictures of Slitheen and Cybermen too. It's very much geared to the 8-year-old market. There's a long comic book story in it that I haven't had a chance to look at yet; the art seems passable; I'll let you know when I've read it.

what would you say if I told you that I already know where the Forbidden Planet is in Edinburgh? ;D

I would say: so do I! And I've been to the ones in London, Dublin, and even New York, IIRC. So why don't they have branches in Canada, hmm?

Just as well for my budget that they don't, of course.

I love the Edinburgh branch - the first one I got to know. The Glasgow one is good, too, but the shop lay-out is more cramped - difficult to see where everything is.

I can't remember going to the branch in Edinburgh, but I must have - ! It must have been there in 2000, and I can't imagine me being in a city with a Forbidden Planet and not going there. Perhaps Lyn and Beulah will remember...
