Budgies...

I got a new budgie today. Logan was so very lonely....

So I went with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi to the pet store at Billings Bridge and contemplated the budgies. It was 2:30 p.m. and they were all having their mid-afternoon nap. There were six budgies - they usually have more, perhaps people have been buying them for Christmas? There were three blue ones, one green and yellow, one white and blue (like Pryde) and one that was an interesting mottled and spotted white, yellow and blue.

I picked one of the blues and named him Remy. X-Men fans will know why.

I put him into the cage with Logan and there has been a long silence - lasting about six hours now. They are eying each other from opposite corners of the cage like two gunslingers in a bar in a western.

They are playing at statues. Rather effectively. It's so ... budgie-like.

Hurrah! I look forward to more anecdotes and pictures as he settles in! And background trills and cheeps!
Is he very different-looking from Logan? (Did you say Logan was sort of turquoise-y?)
How long does it usually take birds to get to know each other?

I looked up 'Remy' and 'X-Men' on Google. That's sweet - to name him after Gambit, but not in such a way as he's a 'replacement' (because they are all individuals)!

You'll get them! There were a few chirps from the cage before I went to bed - I couldn't tell who was chirping (I think it might have been Remy, as the tone was unfamiliar). I didn't want to go too close to find out - that would make them self-conscious.

This morning they were sitting like statues on their respective perches. Of course, they may simply have been sleepy and not believing me that it was morning already. It was still quite dark at 7.15 a.m.

When Gambit - who was green - was around in the same cage, Logan seemed very blue and I described him as blue. Now that Gambit is gone, Logan seems increasingly turqoise and I'm wondering why I ever thought he was blue. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi thinks he is changing colour. Another cute budgie trick!

Remy is a mellow blue, unambiguously. But maybe an even greater difference visually is that he has black stripes from the forehead back. Logan's head is yellow, with black stripes starting way on the back of his head, almost from the nape.

Yes, definitely I need to set up a budgie session of modelling for photos!

How old is Remy? I know that when they are babies, the stripes begin right above the nose, and recede as they reach maturity.

He sounds adorable, anyway - I do hope they get on! Tweets to both boys!

Remy is definitely young, and probably his stripes will recede. I should have asked at the shop. I may phone them: that would be useful information.

It will be interesting to see who is chirping when I get home!

I phoned the shop and asked them the age of their budgies. They said he was less than four months old. No wonder he looks so tiny and unsophisticated!

Aw! Just a youngster!
Magnus was 6-8 weeks old when we got him, and finger-trained.

I may try taking Remy on my finger today.

Yay, I'm so happy! I hope they break the ice, soon.

(Now, to the trash bucket with all your Teflon accessories!)

All the Teflon is gone, gone, gone.

I just got home. There's no chirping yet, but there has been some movement in the cage... Ah! As I typed that, one of them started to sing a little. Wait till they wake up more, I think they might be ready to talk to one another, budgie-style.

Aw! I do hope they will be duetting soon! They are such charming little birds!

There has been some singing this evening, and a great deal of climbing on the cage, and some vociferous cage-banging, which must be Remy's doing, as Logan has never done it. A fine budgie tradition I'd almost forgotten about!

Well, like any youngster in a new home, he will be keen to explore!

I am delighted to hear of it, anyway! Love to them both!

Yes, exploring does seem to be Remy's thing. I hope Logan can help keep him out of trouble while I'm at work.
