[livejournal.com profile] happyminion did this and it looked like fun so here I am.

01. If you had to choose an alias, what would it be?

I wouldn't. I love my own name and identify with it strongly. It practically kills me even to use a pseudonym, though I'm almost comfortable with fajrdrako now.

02. Where were you on 9/11?

At work. All day. Listening to what news I could on the radio and finding what was available on the web.

03. What is your ideal vacation?

The best vacation I ever had was two weeks in Orkney. My ideal vacation would be anywhere with a good castle, or a very ancient site. I have my eye on Malta, Shetland, various parts of England, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland (where I've already been, but I didn't see enough) and my perennial favourite, Italy - especially Sicily. I love islands. Yeah - old islands with castles on them. Would also like to visit the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, and Holy Isle (Lindisfarne) - and let me throw in Iona and the Hebrides while I'm at it.

04. How many first cousins do you have?

Fourteen. There used to be fifteen, but one died.

05. How do you take your pizza?

Hot. I don't mean spicy, I mean heated up - I don't like cold pizza.

That being said, I like most toppings except onions, and I don't like it spicy-hot. Hawaiian is a great favourite, and pesto.

06. If you could be fluent in any foreign language (that you are not already) what would it be?

Etruscan.

Heh.

Failing that, Latin. I can read Latin if I take my time and use a dictionary, but no one could call me fluent. I would like fluency.

Failing that, ancient Egyptian or archaic Greek.

07. What is your favorite website?

theonering.net. Or fireflyfans.net. Or any site with recommendations of good Smallville slash stories.

08. If you could experience another era of history, which would it be?

The twelfth century, preferably in England, France, Italy or Palestine.

09. What is your favorite genre of movies?

Anything historical or pseudo-historical.

10. If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

Wolverine's power of immediate healing. I've been sick way too often in my life and I don't like it.

11. Can you whistle?

No.

12. If you could be any animal for a day, what would it be?

A dog. It isn't a stretch. I'm quite doglike already: enthusiastic, warm, loyal, loving, love to walk, very curious.

13. Who is your favorite fictional character?

Francis Crawford of Lymond.

14. Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Trek. I never really liked Star Wars, though I like Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon.

15. What is your favorite beverage?

Black Lagoon Juice. That's the nickname my friends give to diet root beer.

16. What brand of toothpaste do you use?

Colgate, on my dentist's order.

17. What is your favorite professional sports team?

Whatever the Canadian team is for international soccer.

18. Are you "indoorsy" or "outdoorsy"?

Indoorsy.

19. What is your earliest childhood memory?

Sitting in a jolly jumper on the kitchen table, watching my parents talk. I was probably two.

20. If you could play any musical instrument, what would it be?

Harp.

21. What's your favorite accent?

Scottish. Northern English. Northumbrian, Yorkshire.

22. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer.

23. Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Dog. Big-time dog lover here.

24. If they were making a movie or TV show of your life, who would you choose to play you?

Katharine Hepburn.

25. What is your favorite element (earth, fire, water or air)?

Fire, because it is beautiful.

26. If you could compete in any event in the Olympics (summer or winter) what would it be?

Is reading an Olympic sport yet?

27. What is your favorite Sunday comic strip?

For Better or For Worse.

28. What kind of music do you listen to?

Showtunes. Classical, especially chamber music. New Age. Rock, especially oldies. Pop. In descending order.

29. What is your favorite breakfast cereal?

Oatmeal. The kind made with whole oats. I don't usually eat cereal.

30. What is your worst habit?

Daydreaming.

I enjoyed answering these questions, but I can't believe that anyone is actually reading my answers. Even though I read other people's answers. Hmm.

Loly ISle (Lindisfarne)

I'm curious as to where that name for Lindisfarne comes from. I've heard Holy Island quite frequently, but never that.

Would it completely shatter your illusions if I were to tell you that the castle there isn't too impressive? Nice setting, shame about the building. It's quite recent, too, not nearly as old as one would expect of such a location. The priory is a lot more interesting, from a historical and archaeological perspective.

If I understand correctly, Lindisfarne is the Anglo-Saxon name for Holy Isle - Bede uses it. I don't know what it means - it's a good question! I'll see if I can find the answer.

As for its being unipressive - believe me, even the less impressive castles give me a thrill - the most my country can scrape up is Casa Loma. (Which you can see in the X-Men movies.) But I do want to see the Priory. And the site. Just because of what it is.

I did see it once, from a distance, on the train from Edinburgh to London. That was a thrill in itself, with the sunlight on the North Sea, sparkling.

Sweden is very pretty, you know. ;)

Etruscan.

I adore this answer. Most of the others, too, but this one killed me.

I believe you - and I want to see it for myself!

I'd like to learn the original language of Mohenjo-Daro, too. Have I mentioned how Michael Ventris is one of my heroes?

Gad, I love languages, old and new - though I confess, I find the old ones more exciting. I was thinking this morning how long it has been since I even spent much time studying or even reading about them - for a very good reason: no time. Working for a living puts a crimp in one's style, and I do need time for writing slash (and other things).

Isn't he everyone's hero? Or is that just me having a language nerd's twisted perspective on reality? *g*

If he isn't everyone's hero, he ought to be!
