Beulah came over with a handfull of DVDs. First we browsed a bunch of yoga DVDs, because I have been using such daily now for my yoga practise, which I am happy to say, I have started again. I also have what seems to be a permanent case of sore muscles, but that will pass, that will pass....

Then we watched Cry-Baby, a John Waters movie with Johnny Depp. Beulah was unprepared for the oddness of it all but enjoyed it, and was amazed once again by Depp's beauty.

Then I showed her the Doctor Who episodes, The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, because even though she's a Doctor Who fan, she couldn't remember ever seeing Captain Jack Harkness. I couldn't leave that as the state of affairs, now, could I? She did eventually remember Jack, and we both enjoyed it. Still my favourite episodes. Beulah needed kleenex. (So did I.)

Then I got a delightful surprise phone call from [livejournal.com profile] silverwhistle and we talked happily about Crusaders, one of my favourite topics ever. She told me that Niketas Choniates' Annals had been translated into English in 1984 under the title O city of Byzantium, so I looked it up.... It's $549.95 USC at amazon.com, so I hastily ordered it on Interlibrary Loan. Let's hope I can get it there.

I saw part of a Dr. Who 2005 ep last night. I guess they show it on sci-fi channel, but I don't know times yet. I only caught the ending but I saw and liked Jack.

Lol @ Crybaby.

I only caught the ending but I saw and liked Jack.

Well, then, that narrows it down to one of five episodes. What was happening at the end? Was it:

(1) The Doctor, Rose and Jack being menaced by a bunch of people in gas masks in a hospital, or
(2) The Doctor is dancing with Rose, and Jack joins them in the Tardis;
(3) They're taking an egg (with tentacles)back to its home planet of Raxacoricofalipatorius (I just said the name because I can, whee!) or
(3) attacked by an alien fleet on a space station or
(4) a Jack scene too painful to mention.

Well done, spreading the Jack-love! I love that 2-part story!

I am stunned at the cost of Choniates! I borrowed it from the library at St Andrews (St As inherited Sir Steven's library as well, so I've been using some of his old books, too!) and xeroxed chunks.

If you can't wait, this account (http://www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Post/571628), though fictionalised, uses a fair bit of Choniates about Conrad's adventures. Definitely droolsome, though he was actually about 42, and more on the lithe side... Adorable boy that he is!

Glutton for punishment, I am, watching those episodes over and over (and over).

I love that 2-part story!

I do too. And honestly, I'm not usually quite this obsessive - but it really was a spectactularly good two-part story.

I was stunned at the cost of Choniates too, but I've had this happen before. I wish I had access to British libraries.

Thanks for the link!

Life membership of a university library is a useful thing to have...

I'm sure! Now, I have user-privileges at Carleton U. because I'm an alumna and because I have a "SmartCard", but it's precious little use to me when the library is closed weekends and evenings.

The "SmartCard" works at the University of Ottawa, but at the moment their history floor is simply empty and half-disassembled shelves. Presumably sometime between now and the beginning of term in September, the book collection will reappear - ?

Meanwhile it's ILL for me; I wonder if they'll disbar me at some point for attempted overuse?

Summer vacation opening times are a pain!
And I hate it when they take things apart to re-organise!

I hate it too. I don't know how often they do this, but it always seems like too often - and usually it's difficult to find books afterwards, too.

I will wait impatiently for the beginning of September, and normal evening hours.
