I thought this was nonsense, but then saw the results and thought: Huh. Blue is my favourite colour. The description is either the way I am, or the way I want to be. But then it said "Opra". Oprah? ...Yeah, must be nonsense, but better than lots of nonsense I've seen.

Sometimes I think your life is a sort of echo of mine, or vice versa. We seem to have similar reactions and concerns.... Especially those concerning historical truths.

The irony is, people have sometimes accused me of being "hard" or "less than compassionate" because my emotions are more readily engaged by people from other times.

Well, everyone has their own perspective, and I suppose compassion is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes. My problem (re: other people) has always been that I cannot fake emotion simply because it is socially expected. If something bad happens half-way across the world in the present day, and no-one I know or care about is involved, I won't pretend to be affected simply because everyone else is getting off on vicarious emotion. If a relative who gave me the creeps dies, I can't pretend to be upset. But I've wept for people who died 2 or 8 centuries ago, because they touched my life in ways it's hard to describe.

I can understand that - in fact, I have been known to wonder why people are upset over things that don't seem to me to be upsetting. But I'm also prone to weep (metaphorically) speaking for all the ills of the world, past and present, wherever they may be - especially if they catch my imagination. And sometimes I can't explain why they catch my imagination, they just do.

Yes, it has to capture my imagination, and very little in the modern world does. I didn't give a monkey's about the World Trade Centre, but I wept buckets over the Albigensian Crusade as a student.
