Anyone who's been looking at my icons can guess that I am a fan of Louise Brooks, but I'd never actually seen one of her movies. I figured the time had come, and got Pandora's Box out of the library. It was made in 1928. It may be the first silent film I've seen.

I was impressed. I tend to think of old movies - srom the 30s, say - as being very stylized and mannered, sometimes simply slow in movement and speech. Well, this is definitely mannered, but it was also very lively, expressive, and artistic in its composition. I am more impressed with Louise Brooks than ever - with the extent to which she put across Lulu's personality without words.

Now I want to see more.

Oooh, I really need to see that one.

There was a period of time in the late '20s and early '30s, the end of the silents and beginning of talkies, where the films have really held up better then those that came right after. There's a real difference in theme and style and mannerism in the late silents and pre-code talkies. I love that era because of it. It's about 1928 thru part of 1934. The production code went into effect I think the summer of 34, and the feel and tenor of films completely change.

This tempts me to learn more about film studies - it's really a subject I don't know much about and I haven't seen a lot of old movies, not compared to most people. I really must watch more! When did the Academy Awards start? I could watch the early academy award winners. I'd like to see more Louise Brooks films, too.

Do you have any titles to suggest?
