Pandora's Box
Jun. 4th, 2005 09:44 amAnyone who's been looking at my icons can guess that I am a fan of Louise Brooks, but I'd never actually seen one of her movies. I figured the time had come, and got Pandora's Box out of the library. It was made in 1928. It may be the first silent film I've seen.
I was impressed. I tend to think of old movies - srom the 30s, say - as being very stylized and mannered, sometimes simply slow in movement and speech. Well, this is definitely mannered, but it was also very lively, expressive, and artistic in its composition. I am more impressed with Louise Brooks than ever - with the extent to which she put across Lulu's personality without words.
Now I want to see more.
