This morning I saw (on Yahoo!) a trailer for the Fantastic Four movie. Despite initial trepidation, I'd become quite excited - the impression I hd before was fairly classy. That stylish '4' symbol. The casting. Maybe they were doing it right.

But the trailer was a little ... disappointing. Possibly because I saw it in squintyvision. It looked very like the trailers for the X-Men movies. It looked like all-action-and-effects, not much characterization - though it was nice to see Ioan Gruffudd in the middle of it all. Have I mentioned lately how much I've always loved Reed Richards? Now, there was a major crush when I was ten years old.

So what do I expect - Shakespeare?

Not exactly. But I'm hoping for something that isn't just shouting and explosions.

It will have more than shouting and explosives. It'll have Ioan Gruffudd!

Well, I'll be entertained.

Yes, Ioan will be a joy to watch. I suspect I'll love Reed Richards as much as ever, or more if that's possible, whatever the movie is like.

It could be so good. I'll be satisfied as long as it isn't bad.

I can't seem to get very excited about Ioan in this. Probably because I have a sinking feeling that it's going to be mainly shouting and explosions - plus spandex. *sigh*

And Ioan does character stuff so beautifully. ::whines:: Someone give the man a decent part in a good film...

Talking of which (or not!), there's a two page advert in January's Empire magazine for the Director's Cut of King Arthur - and it doesn't even feature Lancelot. Arthur and Guinevere are pictured - side by side with Bors. Bors. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief. Did they think Ioan was getting too much attention, maybe, and replace him with Bors so that there's no mistaking Clive and Keira as the "stars"? Boggles my mind!

I'm trying not to have negative thoughts about it. The source material is fine. The actors look good, and we know Ioan is great. If anyone can play Reed's strong, masculine intellectuality without making him stuffy, it's Ioan.

Certainly Fantastic Four is like X-Men in concept, where character interaction and personality are an important part of the comic. FF is the comic that made me fall in love with comics completely and forever. I have high hopes... but don't dare to have expectations. It isn't that the comic isn't wonderful. It's that movie makers so often think they have to turn comic books into schlock when they make a movie of it.

Faugh. Don't even get me talking about Catwoman or Elektra. Comic books have some of the most interesting, dynamic and complex action-hero women of any media today. So why do they turn them into bimbos for the movies? (Don't answer that.)

Sorry, I'll stop ranting about comics and movies. But really.

What, no Lancelot in the ad for the director's cut of King Arthur? What's with that? Don't they know we want any glimpse of him we can get? Bors was a good character but he wasn't eye candy. Huh. I bet the ad was composed and designed and created by a man. (One with no taste, too.)
