fajrdrako: ([John Barrowman])

I've seen John Barrowman hug fans. Now he's kissing them.

Makes me smile.

But then, he often does.

fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Amy)

Doctor Who will start August 27.

I'm a little surprised how much this pleases me. I'm not crazy over the Doctor, but Rory!! Looking forward to him. And Amy. And more about the complicated life of River Song.

I think I'll be in Toronto that day, but that's okay. I can record.

"Let's Kill Hitler" Hmm. Makes me think of Captain America, which I've been thinking about lately, because of the new movie. (I'll be seeing it next weekend.) There was an interesting article by Jeet Heer about him - the character, not the movie itself - in today's Globe and Mail: Captain America: A pop culture Rorschach test. I think it should have mentioned the recent "Civil War" storyline in which Captain America led the dissident faction against the U.S. Government, but aside from that, it was an article that showed a good understanding of the material.

To me, the interesting thing about Captain America is not his relationship to the USA, and I must say that the "let's look like the American flag" aspect has always been a turn-off. No, what's interesting is that he is a man out of his time. He must have been born about 1920, and so he's somewhat distanced from our time and culture - an outsider who can be a free-thinker because his background is not that of most people alive today. He has a perspective all is own.

This isn't to say there aren't other Marvel heroes who grew up before World War II - Wolverine, Nick Fury, Magneto - but each is very much his own man, and interesting for that reason.

I've been having trouble posting to Lifejournal the last couple of days. What's the problem?

fajrdrako: ([Game of Thrones])

While working at my computer here, I turned on the television to listen to something in French. There's a movie playing on CBOFT that caught my attention immediately; and I quickly realized it was the 2005 version of Lassie, dubbed into French.

So I listened, and worked on various things, and didn't look up much. Then suddenly I did look up, and saw Peter Dinklage on the screen. Felt a rush of affection, for the sake of Tyrion Lannister, the wonderful character he portrays in Game of Thrones.

But it gets better. Next thing I know, Peter Dinklage is saying to Lassie, "L'hiver s'approche." It's the he motto of the Starks in game of Thrones: "Winter is coming".

Hah! Love it.
