Star Trek

I just got back from seeing the new Star Trek movie.

I've wandered far from Star Trek fandom in the past few decades. Never really liked any incarnation of the TV show after The Next Generation. I forgot all the Trek trivia and lore I once new so well.

And I didn't expect much of the movie. J.J. Abrams, the producer, hadn't impressed me in the long run with Lost and I never saw Alias. Couldn't imagine Star Trek with new actors - some of which I liked, some of which I didn't. I didn't believe they could recapture old magic.

But somehow they did. They managed to find a hit a lot of my old trigger points. They even managed to make me cry. Three times. Without being in the least sentimental.

The good and the iffy, and the surprises... Spoilers ahead here. Be warned. )

A movie worth going back to see again.

I went to the Il Divo concert tonight with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru. Loved it. Interesting staging; sometimes a little too garish for my tastes, but with intriguing visual pictures, bits of film, and lighting; I particularly liked an animated background based on Louise Brooks' series of pictures with pearls.

The best songs in my opinion were She and Hallelujah. I was also glad when they did Amazing Grace, because that's a song I never much liked before; but actually hearing a version of it that I liked (by Il Divo) was what made me pay attention to them in the first place. I also enjoyed Adagio. Had a terrible time placing She; I knew I'd heard it in a movie, tracked it down easily as a Charles Aznavour song, but it took me a while to remember it was in the movie Notting Hill.
