I got my Smart Card from the public library. I got my borrower's card from the Ottawa U library. I got out two, two biographies of Philip Augustus, one in English, one in French. Now I just need time to read them!

Life is good.

It is my intention to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day by not talking like a pirate. Pirates don't conform.

But I was delighted to find this delightful song by the talented [livejournal.com profile] filkertom which gave me a big smile to last me the morning. And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr for pointing it out to me.

One way or another, many of my favourite characters are pirates of one sort or another - renegades and outcasts who go their own way, even when they are lords and kings.

So I'll raise my mug of rum to toast Captain Jack Harkness and Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Cairo Azarcon and Captain Charlie Allnut and all those other brave seafaring souls who elude authority and win the day.

The spoilers for Torchwood have me amused.

Heck, they have me tingling in anticipation.

Bring it on.

(And I see that this explains that nice terrifying little ficlet that [livejournal.com profile] boji wrote that I read today. Uh. Yes. Very Wolverinesque.)

Months ago I found a comic book advertised online, called The Horns of Hattin. A comic book about my crusaders - can it get better than that? But I lost the link and couldn't remember the name of the publisher or the writer/artist. I knew I wrote it down somewhere. I still don't know where.

Well: I must have left my e-mail address with them because they sent me a notice for one of their other comics, and now I have their name and website: Terra Major.

There's also one about Roland, as in Chanson de Roland. I'm going to have to make an order with these people.

If this works, it's one of the most useful sites ever.

Search for anything in Shakespeare. Anything.

Now, I don't watch Stargate Atlantis and normally I'd never read a piece of Stargate Atlantis fanfic. I had to read this one, though, because it was a crossover with Doctor Who, and, even better, featured Captain Jack Harkness. It was An Undone War Still Wages by Cherry Ice.

The Startgate Atlantis bits were over my head, though I could follow the action with no difficulty and mostly remembered what the characters looked like. Despite my ignorance, despite the fact that I felt it was more a Stargate Atlantis story than a Doctor Who story, I enjoyed it very much - good plot, good characterization of Captain Jack, Rose, and the Doctor, and a few fabulously good lines. The first:
"Jack?" McKay asks, and when Jack looks ove,r his mouth snaps shut, compressed to a line.

"McKay," Jack says. "Small galaxy." And this is a problem, this is a big problem, because Jack hasn't met him yet.
I do enjoy time travel paradoxes.

And later, over a wounded or dying man:
"You could fix him," Rose says, quiet.

The Doctor closes his eyes. "I can't fix anyone."

Liar, Atlantis says.

I seem to be in the mood to recommend fanfic today - something I rarely do. Maybe it's because my new Pros story has been running though my head, putting me in an abominably good mood. I need time to write it all down, though.

Though I am getting a little tired of ficlets that list five things, some of them are terrific, and not just [livejournal.com profile] boji's Captain Jack piece. I just got a good laugh from [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore's Five Ways that Clark Would Change Things At LexCorp and Still Run A Successful Company.

I love the way you people in LJ-land are so inventive.

fajrdrako: (These Old Shades)
This story has sat neglected on my hard drive for much too long - as have several other stories. It's a piece of Georgette Heyer slash, based on the novel These Old Shades, because I find the Duke of Avon irresistible.
