I'm really fascinated by languages and I love reading about language in general and in particular, and one really good way to compare languages, or just to get a sense of what they're like, is to look at Bibles. I once had a print-out of the Lord's Prayer in Basque, but I usually like to look at Genesis. You know what you're getting with Genesis - even if it looks entirely different.

Well, here's a new one. Apparently it's a serious dialectical translation, or so I'm told: The Aussie Bible.

I want to read it.

I bet the Ottawa Public Library is not planning to get a copy for its foreign language section.

Those sample chapters are a hoot. I like the idea that the story of Jesus' life is a "ripping yarn."

You know, this translation actually hit the new in England. There was even some controversial debate over it, but I think most people got the sense of fun from it.

Why debate? You mean people disapproved? Why on earth should they?

Yes. Traditionalist argued it was being disrespectful. Another view was that it was dumbing down at it's worst, and stereotyping a nation in an offensive way etc. It wasn't a major thing, but it popped up. Most people had a sense of humour.

And I didn't know you had one, till dargie mentioned it. I was delighted to see it! I blinked at your mention of laitoso until I realized who it must be - he might not be interested in my regular LJ since I talk more about slash than languages, but he might be interested in seeing my Esperanto LJ, which I am neglecting dreadfully, which I (sometimes) write under the name of terdrako. I'll write something in it today, honest I will!
