No Trespassing

Ianto noticed Captain John Hart on the CCTV at 8:07 a.m. Hart wasn't doing much of anything; sitting on a bench, gazing at the scenery. When he first sat down, he had a cup of coffee. When he had finished it, he tossed it in the bin. That was at 9:02.

Ianto gave him till 9:07, then put on his best slate-grey coat and got onto the invisible lift. "Going out?" inquired Gwen, busy at her computer.

"Just for a mo'," said Ianto. He didn't bring her attention to the CCTV. No point. Gwen would just complicate things.

He strode across the Plass to where Captain John sat. He loomed. Captain John, smoking a cigarette - filthy habit - looked unimpressed. Scruffy as ever in that ridiculous uniform, anachronistic to the end. Too bad the knives and guns weren't visible, so Ianto could have him picked up on a dangerous weapons charge. "Good morning, Eye Candy," he said.

"Leave," said Ianto, in his best no-nonsense or-else voice.

"No."

"I'm warning you, Hart -"

"I'm on a public bench in a public place doing no harm to anyone. What is this, the Cardiff Gestapo? You and Jack may rule the roost underground, but you can't stop me from sitting here like any tourist."

"I'm Torchwood. I could make you move. I could make you disappear."

Captain John gave him a mocking smile. "Bully."

Ianto sighed. "What do you want?"

"How is he?"

"Jack's fine. If you're waiting for a glimpse, forget it. He's out and about."

"He'll come back."

"You'll be gone."

"I just want to know how he is. Two thousand years underground. That does something to a man."

"Jack's no ordinary man. If you must know, he's mourning the loss of our friends. But he's all right."

"Top notch?"

"Peachy keen." We was tempted to add the words "in bed", like with fortune cookies, but controlled himself. Captain John was difficult enough at the best of times. No point encouraging him.

"So there's no problem if I wait."

"I don't want you here."

Hart sighed. "Another man might invite me in, act friendly, offer me coffee."

"You've had your coffee. You got it from that grotty shop across the way. You paid too much for it and it wasn't very good, but the girl who poured it was cute."

Hart said admiringly, "Not just sexy but psychic, too. Your skills are endless."

"I do my best. Now leave."

"Jealous?"

"Why should I be jealous?"

"I know Jack. I know Jack through and through, and I've known him longer than you have, and I know things about him you've never dreamed and he's never said and never will say. I know his past, and that's something he won't share with you. You want to know everything. Am I right?"

"Let's see," said Ianto. He put a foot on the bench and leaned on his knee. "As I see it, you're his past, you're history. He told you to get lost. I'm the one in his bed now, the one he cares about. What do I have to be jealous about?"

"Tell me you don't want to know more about him."

Hart was right, but Ianto saw no point in admitting it out loud. He decided to play for the high stakes. "All right then, Time Agent, prove yourself useful. Tell me about the Doctor."

There was an almost-imperceptible pause, and Ianto knew he had won the point when Captain John said, "Who?"

"Forget it," said Ianto. "You've nothing we want."

Without looking back, Ianto walked briskly across the Plass towards the Tourist Office, knowing Captain John was watching him all the while.

Cool! I really like that! It really seems very in character. Though, I might see Captain John going out and making a whole bunch of trouble to get Jack's attention rather than just waiting nearby! ;-)

I think I need a Torchwood/Dr Who icon for commenting on your posts. ;-p

I'm sure this is just the first step.

Best one yet!

He put a foot on the bench and leaned on his knee.

Oh hell yeah. Ianto, any time you want to get all up in my Soviet airspace like that, you've got my number.

That was rather marvellous. John really doesn't know some of the most important stuff about Jack at all.

No. John knows some of his story. Ianto knows some of his story. But neither of them know the whole.

I wonder if anyone knows all of Jack's history? The Doctor did, up until the Game Station (and minus the missing two years), but he doesn't know the story since that time.

The whole is really just known to Jack alone.

You think? I doubt very much if the Doctor knew about Grey. Or about John Hart, even - I can imagine Jack keeping quiet about associating with him around the Doctor.

The whole is really just known to Jack alone.

Now that I definitely agree with.

Hmm. I was assuming Jack had probably told him about things that were important to him; maybe not. He might have been somewhat ashamed to tell him about John, or he might have told it in an offhand way, as one of his adventures: "There I was, suddenly stuck in a time loop with this guy - " That sort of thing.

I think the Doctor (and Rose) knew more about Jack than anyone else has ever known. But when they knew Jack, he was only about 35 years old (subjective time) and a lot has happened since then.

That's not really telling though - an anecdote about lalala timeloop misses most of the important things. Like most of Jack's stories seem to.

I think Jack probably didn't share much that he was ashamed of with Rose and the Doctor - he was trying to live up to them after all. And I had the impression Jack was actively repressing what happened to Grey.

I think the Doctor (and Rose) knew more about Jack than anyone else has ever known

I can kind of see Jack sharing painful memories with them. Maybe, if something brought them up.

I think Rose and the Doctor had the best idea of who Jack was/could be at that time. But I'm not convinced they knew a great deal of his personal history other than cheerfully lecherous tales.

Yes, and I love it when he does that. My point was, though, that if Jack seriously told anyone about the important points in his life, it's the Doctor and Rose he would have told. For instance, he told them about the missing memories. Of the Torchwood team, the only person he's told about being a con man, was Tosh. He told the Doctor and Rose, and he was ashamed of it then, too - I think it was a matter of getting it off his chest.

Of course he may or may not have told the Doctor and Rose anything - and may well have wanted to hide the more shameful stuff, though they might have guessed anyway.

My point being: If he'd tell anyone, I think they'd be the most likely ones.

Nasty? How so?

I take it you haven't seen "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang", and that's the reaction of someone who hasn't seen it? Do you mean Captain John was nasty, or Ianto was, or both, or that my perspective was?

Just curious.

Given the events of "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang", I can imagine Ianto shooting Captain John on sight, but Jack might not like that. Anyway, my Ianto, though tough, is more of a gentleman than that.

Uh, oops. Intercultural mistransliteration, coming right up!

"Nasty" like this means: hot, sexy, charged, throbbing with undercurrents, all that visceral stuff that inspires the grinding of hips. Nasty in a very, very good way!

That kind of "nasty."

As in, "Hey. You and me. Let's get nasty."

Doorstep

Oh. New usage to me. Americanisms, I'll never get the hang of them!

As in, "Hey. You and me. Let's get nasty."

Doesn't that mean sex? No sex here, nosireeebob, even though I've read some pretty hot Ianto/John fic and wouldn't rule out writing it.

But not this time.

Maybe later on.

Maybe. You know, an outside chance.

~ ~ ~

"You sent him away?" Jack's eyes were sad with disappointment.

"I thought you didn't want to see him."

Jack considered. "Maybe, maybe not. We had some good times. He knows a thing or two.... Pretty good in bed, in fact."

"Oh?"

"Innovative," said Jack.

"Oh, really?"

"Maybe even... by your Welsh standards... avant garde. It's too late now, though. You were bitchy to him. He'll be sulking. He won't come back."

There was a long pause. A lengthening pause. The careful innocence of Jack's expression clued Ianto in. "Jack? You have your wrist-band. You could call him."

"You think so?"

"You could whistle and he'd come running."

"Ah. Yes. The poodle principle."

"You could whisper his name and he'd be on your doorstep."

Jack dropped his eyes and whispered. "Ianto. *John*." Ianto's lips brushed Jack's, teasingly moist. Jack said, a little more firmly, "John."

He kissed Ianto, hard.

When he could speak, Ianto continued. "...As a matter of fact, he's probably on your doorstep right now."

"Damn," said Jack, lightly. "I was hoping I could at least pretend to hunt for him. Shall we invite him in?"

I think Ianto would want to shoot him, but Jack would stop him. Captain John usually needs being shot, rather like Owen did, and Ianto's the man to oblige.
