I have my computer back. Oh joy and bliss. Access again!

Many friends helped me, especially [livejournal.com profile] maaseru, who let me use her laptop during the hiatus and drove me to pick up my machine. The power supply had died - they said they managed to recover all my data, and I hope they are right. It seems just fine. It's even reset to my old Captain Jack desktop wallpaper. Those Gamepower boys work miracles.1

[livejournal.com profile] iclysdale helped me set it up, which was much appreciated, too. I can do it. Really, I can. But he did it so much faster and better than I can.

And [livejournal.com profile] commodorified proved what a lovely guest she can be. While we were sitting around my living room, eating spaghetti, drinking tea, and watching Due South ("Starman"), we used up all the milk in my fridge and had to use canned condensed milk in our tea. A while after everyone left, there was a tap on my door. It was [livejournal.com profile] commodorified, who had bought me a litre of milk and walked back to give it to me, so I could have milk with my breakfast.

I'm so very tired... It's been a long and stressful day. Week. Whatever. But the things that happened to counteract that make me smile.

1 It amuses me no end that most of the guys who work there seem to be named Tim, though they hired a Philip recently. Possibly an oversight? Or a pseudonym?

Glad that you got your computer back.

I'm going to Adelaide tomorrow with my friends. I have to meet a friend on the bus on the way to Adelaide. He catching it from the suburb before mine which is on the route. He doesn't know how to Bee Hive corner where the chocolate shop Haighs is so he's tagging along with me. It's also the first shop at the entrance to rundle mall and it's not hard to spot as there is a huge bee sticking out from the sign which says bee hive corner.

"Starman" is a weird little episode, isn't it? There's so much that's annoying about Ian, and yet the dynamic between Ray and Fraser is wonderful (and Ray looks especially nice in the white turtleneck), and the old couple at the end - it should be maudlin, and yet somehow, it's not. It always moves me.

Indeed not. They got their answers and they can live with them. Not everyone gets such answers.

Even the relationship between Audrey and Ian, which should have been silly, was rather interesting and touching. I know a few people like Ian - not necessarily liars, but people with personality quirks that just keep them from being acceptable, and they get so close to overcoming them - just never quite make it. I always have high hopes for people like this; they're always on the edge of potential.

Fraser is excellent in this one, though even for him, he's unusually passive.

For some reason I adored the image of Ray sitting at the bonfire, wrapped up in his Hudson's Bay blanket.

Bee Hive Corner - I think even I could find it, given that description. (And believe me, I don't know Adelaide - !) It sounds vaguely scary, like something in a Batman story.

If I can paraphrase Tolkien - they got hope, and that was all they needed.

I adored Ian (in his own irritating way) in "The Man Who Knew Too Little" - that episode had terrific, terrific banter, as witnessed by my all-time favourite dS line, immortalized in this icon. "Starman" fails to capture that "magic" and is oddly fragmented, but i've found if I like the Ray/Fraser interaction, I'm fine with an episode. "All the Queen's Horses" is a double episode that many people love, but between Paul Gross's adolescent humour, and more especially, Fraser and Ray being apart for the entire episode, I find it my least favourite of the first two years, even though there are others that I realize are objectively not as good.

For some reason I adored the image of Ray sitting at the bonfire, wrapped up in his Hudson's Bay blanket.

Ray doesn't do "outdoors" - although North is possibly my very favourite episode, and it's about Ray in the great outdoors and doing well. I loved the original title, because it got to the heart of what I take away from the episode: "I Never Camped with My Father".

Adelaide is alright, it isn't as big as the other cities in Australia.

it's square shaped, our city because that was colonel light's vision.

I looked it up; it seems to be a little larger than Ottawa.

That was a good line. There were many good lines. "Fragmented" is a good word for "Starman", as there was something random about it - the kind of story that feels as if they were making it up as they went.

I haven't yet decided what my favourite DS episodes are but I suspect they are not going to be the same as the favourites of most other people.

I like "I Never Camped With My Father" better as a title for "North" than "North", because, really, the northerliness of the setting was irrelevant; but the camping/hiking aspect, and the parental relationships, were central.
