Can anyone here recommend any Man from U.N.C.L.E fic? Slash preferably, but anything good will do.

I've already read the wonderful story Botticelli by Elizabeth Bear; best thing I've read in ages.

If you know any Man from U.N.C.L.E. sites or communtities, that would be good, too.

Breakfast: made (and improvised) a recipe for banana muffins without sugar. I used some maple syrup. They won approval from [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and Pim, so I'll keep the recipe and do it again.

Went to the Ottawa Slashers' brunch; it was good to see them. I hadn't been to one of those get-togethers in ages. I also liked the breakfast menu at the Clocktower pub: I was able to get my minimalist egg and toast with no trouble. With bonus peanut butter, even.

Went to the Girls Want to Know show held by the Lesbian Information Xchange at the Glebe Community Centre. How wonderful of them to hold it within easy walking distance of my place... There were a lot of booths and interesting businesses, from lawyers to reiki practitioners, pet services to beadwork - all sorts of things. I bought a pair of earrings.

Worked on the editing project that I've taken on.

Put my Professionals slash novel Forever True online. I should have done that eons ago. Note to self: get more of my fic up. It's about time. I don't still have all of it, but I have a lot.

[livejournal.com profile] maaseru and Pim joined me for supper. We watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E., " The Deadly Games Affair". Loved it. Oh, Napoleon. Oh, Illya. Love the mischeivous look Illya gives Napoleon at the end, when Angelique is waiting for him.

I had a video-party to watch The Man from U.N.C.L.E. this afternoon, with [livejournal.com profile] lunacy_gal, [personal profile] deakat, [livejournal.com profile] gamergrrl, Beulah, and Tasia. We watched "The Project Strigas Affair" (the episode with Shatner and Nimoy in it), ""The King of Knaves Affair", "The Terbuf Affair", and (from fourth season) "The Deadly Quest Affair". Loved it all. Oh, Napoleon. Oh, Illya.

Afterwards, mostly because Tasia urged me to, I got to work on the Apaplexy mailing comments.

Today:

  1. I got up early to make extra-healthy blueberry muffins from a recipe the nutritionist gave me. They turned out to be incredibly delicious. I had two for breakfast, then couldn't resist snacking on one in the afternoon.

  2. Went shopping at St. Laurent shopping centre with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru. I had Yakisoba-Tofu soup for lunch at the food court there. I was reminded of first watching Blade Runner, and loving the idea of being able to buy - and eat - Asian foods in western cities. Sure, we've had Chinese restaurants here all my life, but fast food Japanese? Thai? Not so much. I love it.

  3. Watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. epiosde 1x09, "The Project Strigas Affair". From my point of view, the joy was in seeing William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy both in the show. Wonderful! And Illya in disguise had me laughing. So did [personal profile] random's reaction: it seriously destroyed his brain.

  4. Also watched Hustle, episode 1x01. Fund to see Robert Vaughn, forty years later. Wow. I suggested that we do an evening of shows featuring Robert Vaughn (Stingray came to mind; I loved him in that) and another evening featuring Davic McCallum - Sapphire and Steel? NCIS?

  5. Tried doing knitting with a bit of a pattern and totally fouled up. Unravelled it and returned to sample squares.

  6. Made moussaka for supper. It took a while, but the results were worth it. It got high praise even from those who do not dole out praise lightly. I am momentarily proud.

My first TV fandom was The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. I was twelve years old (barely), on the way to visit my grandfather in Clifton, Arizona. I'd never been anywhere but Ottawa and Toronto before. My parents and I spent a night in a hotel in Lordsburg, New Mexico, where I got to watch an American TV station for the first time in my life. The show was The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. The episode was "The Dove Affair". A strong, happy memory.

When I got home, I discovered that this wonderful was on Canadian TV, too, and it was soon all the rage at my school. My friends and I wrote U.N.C.L.E. stories and played U.N.C.L.E. games and collected the toys - I still have my U.N.C.L.E. cigarette lighter that becomes a gun, though alas, I no longer have the LP of the U.N.C.L.E. music - I think I played it into oblivion.

I felt a little out of step with the other U.N.C.L.E. fans I knew, because everyone except me seemed to prefer Illya to Napoleon. That was okay. I liked Illya, too. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about him: Illya Kuryakin and Napoleon Solo.

So the decades have gone by (how'd that happen?) and though I've been aware of U.N.C.L.E. as a large and thriving slash fandom, I mostly kept away. I was afraid to watch the old episodes again, for fear they'd seem old-fashioned and sexist. But I've been curious, too, so when I visited my friends in Paris recently and they showed me a couple of episodes I hadn't watched for all those years, well... The magic was still there.

So today I watched a few U.N.C.L.E. music vids:
I found myself looking at Illya more than I used to - and then making icons showing Napoleon. And the two of them together. Read what wikiepdia has to say about Illya. Now I want to write a fic. Hmm. Should I do that, without even knowing what other people are writing? Without having seen more than two episodes in almost forty years? Well, why not?

Now I need to go looking for fanfic. Anyone have any suggestions?
