Thanks to [personal profile] fairestcat for pointing me to this article, The Boy Who Lived Forever by Lev Grossman. It seems like a long time since I've noticed mention of fanfic in mainstream journalism; though it has been become increasingly common to mention the participation of fans, fanfic included, in TV shows like Supernatural.

The first article I remember ever seeing about slash was in a British tabloid where the author wrote about the "scandal" of Kirk and Spock being lovers in this clandestine media. One got the impression that the author of the piece didn't know (or didn't care) about the difference between fact and fiction.

I particularly liked it that Lev Grossman starts out talking about The Man from U.N.C.L.E. which was my first fandom, though confined to me and my two best friends. I found the wide world of fan fiction with Star Trek and K/S much later. Until then, as far as I knew, I was the only one doing it.

[livejournal.com profile] filkferengi made sure I saw this poem by [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith, "Slashing Through the Undergrowth", of which I think the very best line is the one used in the title - but then there's this bit:

This is where the archetypes go,
so this is where the muses go too
    at two in the morning
with cups of coffee and tea and cocoa

And this bit:

Put the pieces together in a different order,
    dress them in fresh costumes,
and tell them what their fandom is all about.

Doesn't that just encapsulate fandom?

This evening I watched Lost Girl with [livejournal.com profile] explodedteabag. Before watching, I knew nothing about it except that I'd seen a poster advertising it at fanexpo, and liked the poster. Liked the look of the hero, especially, who turns out to be Kristen Holden-Ried, whom I'd liked long ago as the boyfriend in Touch of Pink.

Now, I've been complaining about how I don't find urban fantasy that I like, and this is urban fantasy. But I liked the first episode a lot, for numerous reasons:

  1. Lots of nice femslash.
  2. A great teen girl thief sidekick who reminds me of Jubilee, if not Stephanie Brown.
  3. No compromising with the material, or whitewashing the characters.
  4. The right kind of comic book flavour: good sets and costumes, nice sense of place - urban decay and stylishness. Very interesting visuals on the characters. I like ther Canadian style, which isn't quite like the British or the American.
  5. Did I mention the femslash? And a nice hot het vibe between Bo and Dyson. The best of both worlds.
  6. I have been fascinated lately by the Daken at Marvel comics, whose attributes include independence, powers of seduction, omnisexuality, and often, the killing of those he seduces. Bo has these same characteristics. A new theme for a new sort of protagonist?
  7. And, I might guess, just a bit of a polyamorous vibe coming up between Bo, Dyson, and Lauren. Fine with me.
  8. Beautiful people in black leather.
