Had a lovely lunch with [livejournal.com profile] lunacy_gal at Taste Ramen + Fusion on Bank Street, which I think must be the worst name for a restaurant ever. I was afraid there might be nothing there I could eat with a paleo-style diet, but I ordered "shrimps and eggplant in black bean sauce" and it was delicious. I just had to pick out a bit of corn.

Baked wheat-free banana bread. Watched an episode of Lost Girl, catching up with season 2 episodes so I can watch season 3. How nice to see sexy Dyson again.

Yesterday [personal profile] baronjanus asked me in passing if all the sex scenes on Lost Girl were het. I was about to reply "my goodness, no", but haven't had a chance yet.

But then the question got me thinking about the sex on the show. It all centres around Bo, who is a bisexual succubus, her most significant ongoing sexual relationship on the show has been that with Dyson. There was one big sex scene between Bo and Lauren, which led to them breaking up, though that may change. Since Lauren is more interesting in season 2, I'd like that.

So we have lots of m/f sex and more f/f sex than you usually see on television, and one not-terribly explicit f/f/m sex scene. No m/m sex at all. Not that I can remember. Now, Bo gets most of the sex scenes, which makes sense, because she's our protagonist, and her love life is a significant part of the story; but there are characters of all types, whose stories we see, and I can't think of any explicit implication that any of the male characters are anything but het... Well, except for the guy who said he liked a man in uniform. Okay, there's one. He didn't get a sex scene.

Am I just forgetting? In the Fae party scenes, I can't recall any background image of men making out or dancing together (as we might get in Doctor Who).

It's one of those shows which has made clear that everyone's got different personalities, powers, natures, and sexual orientation are... fluid. So anyone could be bi. As far as I recall, the only character who has verbally stated a sexual orientation is Kenzie, who, to my disappointment, said she was straight. There are two characters in the show who are human rather than Fae, both women: Kenzie and Lauren. Kenzie said she was straight. Lauren hasn't said, and from what we've seen, I'd guess she was lesbian, but who knows? She might be bi, she might be straight with everyone in the universe except Bo. We don't know, and I like that openness in the show. Women are just as sexual as men. And that's something you don't often see on television.

Villains are as likely to be female as male. I like that, too. I like it that so many of the people we see on the screen are female, unlike the many shows where the population seems to be heavily male, even when, or especially when, the protagonist is a woman. And I like it that though the relationship between Bo and Kenzie isn't portrayed as sexual, it is the most most touchy-feely, cuddly relationship on the show. Since I have a major crush on Kenzie, I'm hoping she isn't as het as she pretends.

Now that Dyson and Bo are estranged and separated, I'd love to see him get a rebound boyfriend for a while.

None of this is particularly politically correct, as far as I can see. It is in character for the characters involved. It might be inspired by nothing more enlightened than a few producers saying, "Hey, let's see a few hot women together," and they thought up a scenario that make it plausible.

Or it might be fear - not homophobia, but fear of losing sponsors, or of alienating the American audiences - something they don't have anyway, as far as I know, but they're probably hoping.

Why am I so tired these days? Came home from work and fell asleep.

Had a lovely supper with Pim and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru. Then Pim and I watched this week's episode of Lost Girl, "Scream a Little Dream", in which the antagonist was a Mare. It was great silly fun and I loved it that even though Dyson wasn't actually in the episode, he appeared plenty and even got a shower scene.

And though I don't much like the new Ash, I like the dynamic between him and Bo. Very sparky.

This evening, Pim and I watched last week's episode of Lost Girl and I absolutely loved it. Best episode yet, maybe. Not for any particular reason except my enjoyment factor.

But Dyson never took his shirt off. What's with that?

Watched the first episode of the second season of Lost Girl with Pim tonight.

Loved it.

Dyson took his shirt off within the first minute of his first appearance. What could be wrong with that?

It was fun seeing them on the show, after having seen them in person at FanExpo last week.

I like the new developments with the characters and plot; and the new Circus-Outast Fey; and mu goodness, what did they do to Lauren to suddenly make her both more sexy?

Watched Lost Girl this evening with Pim and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru: episode 1x10, "Faetal Justice". Nice if you like an episode in which Dyson spends most of his time shirtless (which I do), and the bondage scene reached almost X-Men proportions. Kenzi as always was wonderful, and Trick is more intriguing than ever.

I was tired today. (Note to self: go to bed early, like before ten. Oops. Too late for that already.) I had to go downtown, and did so despite the snow on the ground, without much trauma - yay me. Even bought groceries, so I won't starve.

Did about half my allotted exercises. And laundry.

After picking up my comics at the Silver Snail, I met [livejournal.com profile] maaseru for lunch at Manchu Wok. I did something delightfully but almost embarrassingly fannish: I bought duplicate copies of Dark Wolverine #90 and Daken: Dark Wolverine #1, the most recent two issues with Daken in them, because I liked them so much, and I thought it's be good to have an extra reading copy of each, or that I could frame favourite pages and put them on my wall, or... something. Read them both over again. Loved the writing and art as much as before. I've been enthusiastic over various comics in the last few years (for Matt Fraction's wonderful work on Iron Man, for example) but haven't loved a comic so delightfully fannishly for a long time.

Then I was off to physio with no time to spare - Paratranspo was fifteen minutes early. My physiotherapist, Leslie, said that my progress on my arm straightening is slowing now as the scar tissue is hardening, and she's got me started on arm strengthening now. And raising my arm, which is difficult and painful and must be done. And I was using the machines, which is fun, but I can't take the machines home with me. Leslie also said not to use the glove or the foam for th lymphedema in my hand any more; they've served their purpose, and now I should just use the hand as much as possible. I think the lymphedema must be almost gone, except at the base of my fingers. Even my little finger is getting some sensation and motion back.

Leslie also said I will never, ever be able to hold more than five pounds with my left arm. The surgeon, before the surgery, said ten pounds would be my limit. I'll have to clarify with him... In any case, it doesn't sound like much. I am trying not to be depressed by this. I will cope. But no more Downward Facing Dog. Ever.

When I got home again, I did something I haven't done in years, maybe decades: I wrote a letter to Marvel Comics. I used to do it all the time. My first printed letter was in Fantastic Four #31, I think - thereabouts. [livejournal.com profile] maaseru urged me to write to them again, like I used to, to express my enthusiasm for Daken. So I did. Had to get her to print it on her printer, though, because my printer is still in her car and neither of us can lift it out. It's well over my ten-pound limit (not to mention my possible 5-pound limit) and I can't lift it with one hand even to put it on a cart.

I'm sending positive, healing thoughts to [livejournal.com profile] bunsen_h, who has just had surgery.

In the evening, [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi came to my place and we watched the second episode of Lost Girl. It wasn't quite as good as the first episode, but it was still loads of fun; and Bo finally... ) And I more than ever like Ksenia Solo as Kenzi. In the same way I always loved Jubilee.

Then [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi went off to do laundry and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru came by to watch Castle, and I thought maybe this episode (the first of third season) was the best yet. Heavy on the Castle/Beckett relationship, great characterization and style.
