From the Royal York Hotel, Toronto...
Aug. 28th, 2009 10:46 pmWent to Beulah's around 10 a.m., to give her my apartment keys so she can take care of the budgies over the weekend.
Then
The CN Tower lights up beautifully at night.
We went to the Fan Expo and walked around the dealers room, gawking. Lots of things I want to get - maybe a Batman/Catwoman T-shirt? Or one showing Mal Reynolds? Wish I could find a good Captain Jack one. Or Nick Fury. Or Gambit....
Saw Emma Caulfield and Mary MacDonnell, which was cool. And many wonderful, wonderful costumes, both at the Expo and at this oh-so-posh and respectable hotel, including and excellent Deadpool going into the lobby.
Dinner at the Lone Star on Simcoe and Front. (I think.)
My roommates are going to bed and I should too. Looking forward to tomorrow.
This morning I met up with the Torchwood Forum group at the fountain in Raold Dahl Plass, where we were greeted by Tristan and the day's activities explained – except for a mysterious early afternoon event which we were not supposed to know about. We didn't know about it, actually, but we could guess.
First,we went to the Doctor Who exhibit at the Red Dragon Centre. It was a bit smaller than I excepted, delightfully laid out and explained, and really a lot of fun. My favourite bit? Easy: Captain Jack's greatcoat from “The Doctor Dances”. My second favourite bit? The Ninth Doctor's outfit. And a huge poster-picture of David Tennant on location in Rome. But it's also a treat to see the props, and the levitating Dalek, and the Stone Angel, and the Cybershade, and the clockwork robot from “Girl in the Fireplace”. I liked the section in the guide book that said:
Confession: though the place was littered with signs saying please do not touch, I fondled Captain Jack's coat. Just a little.
WARNING: Although we've been assured that these examples are immobile, if any adults with you get scared, remember to hold their hands!
Then we went with our trusty guide for the Torchwood tour of the Cardiff Bay area. It's astounding how much is in a very tiny bit of space. One thinks of the BBC as going to such far-flung places as Dubai and Rome, though that's atypical. But 51st Century Boshane is just the other side of the Bute Docks building where Martha and Ten said good-bye to Jack at the end of “Last of the Time Lords”, with the steps Gwen and Rhys sat on to eat ice cream on one side of it, with the Norwegian Church that Tosh and Tommy visited on the other side.
Round about that point in the tour, a chatty native on a bicycle stopped to talk to us. He'd seen a lot of the filming, and more, had seen the reconstruction of the Cardiff Bay area over the years. He talked about seeing Matt Smith filming recently: "He looks about twelve years old, really. He looks younger than the girl he's acting with. But he has the Who spirit."
Our tour ended with the doorway to the Hub, the one I've described already with the flowers and memorials to Ianto. I looked back along the quay to the place where Ianto, begging for a job, pursued Jack with coffee. Allowing for the distorted perspective of the camera, it looked just right.
Then we had a break for lunch, and I headed with
He was, of course, charming. He signed things and took care to spell things right, and smiled for photos, and posed with people.
We had time then to wander the centre of the city. I had a good look at Cardiff Castle, and took pictures – it's far larger than I had imagined, and
We met up as a group at The R Bar at the Red Dragon Centre, and had a rather complicated and extremely difficult trivia game that covered all series of Torchwood, classic and new Doctor Who, miscellaneous science fiction movies and TV shows including Forbidden Planet, Thunderbirds and Battlestar Galactica. My team got thirteen and a half out of a possible fifty-odd points; the winning team got twenty-four. “You have no life,” the quizmaster told them. “It's sad, really.”
Prizes included the new Captain Jack action figure with the dark blue shirt, which looks better each time I look at it.
Pausing bfeore dinner at Torchsong...
Jun. 6th, 2009 05:14 pmI should rest for a bit, but at the moment I am high with joy on the wonderful, wonderful session with Carole Barrowman on stage in person and John Barrowman on SkyChat. That man impresses me more all the time - personable, clever, kind, and very, very funny. As is Scott... in a Speedo.... There were so many great moments. For example:
- To sign off, John pulled off his shirt and did a dance for us in his chair
- He showed us his boot - it looked just like the one I wore last year!
- He talked to (and was teased by, and teased in return) Tom Price and Mark Sheppard
- Lots of teasing between Carole and John, and Claire too, mostly about sex (hopefully I'll have time to transcribe the sordid details later!)
- A funny few moments with his mother, who's as much of a goofball as John is
- Young Henry Edwards, young son of artist Tommy Lee Edwards, came to the microphone and asked John if he recognized him. John did, and talked a little about the comic he and Carole did with Henry's dad. Henry thanked John for phoning him at Christmas.
- One of the boys there - and his was clearly a huge surprise for John - was young Adam, who appeared in The Making of Me. John was delighted to see him and all the more sorry he couldn't be at the con, where Adam had come all that way (with his mother) to see him.
- We got to see Harris and Captain Jack on screen. Though John had complained earlier that a fan at one event had licked his face, which he hates, it's clear he likes it when one of his dogs does it. It's the imposition by strangers that bothers him.
- He told the full story of his injury, including mimicking his mother's unsympathetic scolding at the time.
- John Barrowman taked about some upcoming writing projects he is doing with Carole, including a Torchwood novel and a series of adventures novels for teens.
This was such a wonderful afternoon.... thanks to John Barrowman.
Did I explain about Tom Price's injury? Tom, who plays PC Andy, is one of the Torchwood stars in attendance. He made us gape by walking in on Friday night with his arm in a cast. Shortly after his arrival in Chicago, he was knocked down by a cyclist and his arm was broken. He appeared on stage this morning (like a trooper) but was clearly in pain - and even more so at his autograph session. At his talk, a nurse in the audience showed him how to fix his sling so his arm would be more comfortable. He accused us all of mothering him. Quite rightly.
There have been a lot of killer-cyclist jokes going around. John's first comment to Tom: "Didn't anyone tell you they drive on the right in America?" For his own scheduled talk, Gareth came on stage with crutches, as a joke.
Joking aside, Gareth David-Lloyd is the only uninjured Torchwood star here, and he should maybe be hiding in a bubble to keep him safe. His talk was terrific, too: intelligent, smart and sexy.
And Peter Wingfield.... Well. I will report sometime later, as I took notes. He's as delightful as everyone has always said he is. I was impressed, more impressed (and besmitten) than I expected to be.
I have abused
Can you tell I'm having a wonderful, wonderful time... Oh, and in case you hadn't noticed: Torchwood fans are lovely people.
