Domino has come out of the nesting box.

Domino is my budgie who hatched about six weeks ago. When born, he was a tiny, featherless thing whose cheeping sounded like a cricket in my apartment - a very softspoken cricket.

I was able to peek at him a few times, inside the enclosed nesting box. From a bare little thing lying on his back, with big eyes and a triangular head (very like the archetypal alien, but without hands) he became a ball of grey fluff with a big appetite.

No more grey fluff: it has turned into bright green and yellow feathers, with black trim. Now he is a pint-sized mobile budgie, out of the nest and exploring the world. He can't walk very well, and he can't fly at all, though he likes to stretch and flap his wings. Instead he jumps and lurches from perch to perch or wall to wall of the cage. He doesn't handle the perches too well - he tends to slip and end up underneath them, struggling to climb back on top. He'll get the idea soon enough.

His favourite spot is the hamster wheel. He can run, he can flap, he can sit; he's partially enclosed but in the open - for the moment, that's his spot.

When I covered the cage last night, the adult budgies, as they usually do, stretched and yawned and got ready to sleep. Domino screeched, jumped off his perch, and scrambled to the only haven of safety he could find - the floor of the cage underneath the nesting box.

When I came home from work just now, I caught his parents boffing. And Wisdom is sitting on another egg.

Uh-oh.

I'm so glad, because I don't want to come across as the doting budgie-mother who can't stop talking about how cute her pets are. Except of course I *am* a doting budgie-mother and you know what we're like. Gotta report on the cute little guys.

The budgies make me smile, so I'm happy if I'm passing the smile along.

Well, I'm often surprised that people can put up with my blabbing about L & M all the time, not to mention Shakespeare, Magic, Merlin, Moe, and Edward. I guess that proves they're really our friends!

And isn't it wonderful to have them.

Oh, I've loved hearing about Domino :)

When I came home from work just now, I caught his parents boffing. And Wisdom is sitting on another egg.

Bwahahahahahaha!

*ahem*

/me goes away, still giggling

He's adorable, as all little things are. Next time you're over you'll get to meet him.

Yeah, you can laugh - you are the one who has to go look at prices of larger cages.

You know the phrase 'eat like a bird'? It's misleading. Collecitvely they eat seed by the ton.

/me nods -- yeah, I've heard that that's a misleading thing because while birds eat a tiny bit at a time they basically eat all day and many times their own body weight a day, no?

And yes, it's *much* funnier from this side of the cage than yours, I'm sure *grins*

Well, I'm not really complaining, 'cause they're just fun. But. A new cage. Really.

As for how much they eat - it's quite amazing. Some days they'll hardly eat a thing (and its surprising how long they can go without food or water, I think they're related to camels - I certainly couldn't go as long as they do). Other days they eat more seed than you'd think possible.

They do keep me smiling!

Thank you for this Domino report. I love that he has green and yellow feathers, like my dear Ceilidh. He sounds adorable, like all of your budgies.

And another egg! Wonderful news!

Obviously I think they're adorable. Such lively personalities in just a few ounces of feathers.

As for the new egg.... Yeah. Budgies R Us.

There must be pictures soon! And that cage is going to be quite crowded with budgie babies, isn't it?

(Groan) Yup, it's a budgie population explosion. Or at least it feels like it. I am waay too outnumbered as it is.

Pictures - I really do want to get some, especially now that Domino is out and about. I'll try to borrow a camera.

Domino is a very lovely bird; you should be proud, Grandma! :) I still can't believe how big he is! I wish I could have seen him when he was a little ball of fluff. Awwwwwww....

We both preen at the compliment!

I still can't believe how big he is!

And growing fast. But you can tell he has a bit of the budgie version of baby-fat or maybe just fluffiness of feathers that makes him look a little bigger than he actually is.

little ball of fluff

Well, at that stage he was very... fluffy. And shy. I only got one or two glimpses of him.
