Writing has laws of perspective, of light and shade just as painting does, or music. If you are born knowing them, fine. If not, learn them. Then rearrange the rules to suit yourself. - Truman Capote

Just about sums it up. Only drawback is that this is a journey, and it takes decades to get to this lovely point of self-determination, eh? Epitaph: hold it, I need more time!!

Learning the process is an ongoing thing, all the more constant becuase it's subjective and different for each person. It's like learning about life: it goes on till one's last breath. Or in this case, one's last word.

Indeed. When I was a young teen, I ran across T.S.Eliot and Walt Whitman and Tennessee Williams, John Steinbeck, and Hemingway all at once, and was doing sentence structure like they did in no time. My teachers hated it. I, however, was having a blast. Then I started to work on dialogue -- did plays, got into that. Then I dove into descriptive essays, and am still enjoying that. All through, in the interstices, still working on narrative and character... not one single path, but many and simultaneous.

Now, I am much more into non-typical writing in fiction -- what could be called surrealist writing, I guess. But that's just me. But I promise I won't do that with the Gwen/Tosh story!

You can do whatever you like with Tosh and Gwen - it's your story! I am not usually into surrealism or non-linear stories, but it depends on the specifics.

Oh, I was just thinking out loud.

Hey, fun times at work: several days ago, I encountered -- let me start over. At work, we use wheeled equipment in which to transport mail. Some are three feet wide by two feet deep by about five feet eight inches high, and are called all-purpose containers -- APCs. Well, we use a lot of them each day. They come in and out, and some have writing on them -- occasionally, one will come through with locations and dates on it from all over the country. We of course are not to write on our equipment, but if someone writes "Go Cowboys" on something, when that APC arrives in someplace other than Texas, someone's going to write "Go Niners" on it, or something, and it just takes off.

Anyway, this APC had this written on one side: BAD WOLF DO NOT USE. Clearly, it had said BAD DO NOT USE and someone else put the word WOLF in there. So I took a marker and wrote ROSE & 9 next to that, smiling at the obscure allusion and wondering if it would eventually come to a Doctor Who fan who would figure it all out. Well, I was that "Doctor Who fan who would figure it all out," because half an hour later I finally noticed on the opposite side of the APC: BAD WOLF all by itself. Yep, somewhere in the USPS is at least one other really cool person [heh].

I love this. I need to find something to write BAD WOLF on.
