An addendum to my post earlier today about the letter I wrote to the CBC about their censoring of lines and scenes with gay relevance in Torchwood: I told [livejournal.com profile] maaseru how I'd written that letter, and how the CBC had responded to Thomas' phone call, and she said cogently, "It's because of the Conservative government."

She's right.

I hope we can vote them out.

we have to.

That's for sure.

I think the trick will be to ensure that, and also to make sure that whoever does get the government side of the House is also in a minority position. At least, sufficiently so to force a coalition arrangement this time around.

I agree. The question is, how to ensure that? The answer is, in a democracy, we can't ensure anything, it's all a bit of a crap shoot.

With "first past the post" election rules as we've got right now, absolutely a crap shoot.

Do you know any friendly magicians or probability-enhancers? Every little bit helps.

Yes. We have to make it so.

May I remind you of the ABC (Anybody But neo-Conservative) movement? This is a proposal whose time has come.

Yeah, anybody but neo-Conservative? Or old Conservative, either, come to that.

You may want to keep Steven Fletcher around as a health critic. Maybe one or two others whose names I'm blanking on at the moment. As an occasionally useful rump opposition party.

I'm all for a strong Opposition. It's like having opposable thumbs: it makes things work better.

A friend of mine who lives in CA temporarily - not a citizen or anything - is doing flyers, volunteering at the polls, etc. I find that really inspiring.

Inspiring and important, I'd say. My instinct is always to deal with politics by ignoring the whole thing - though I always vote. But sometimes I've worked on NDP campaigns because I think it's important. And it is.

Gee, that's funny. That's exactly how I feel about the party currently occupying the executive branch of my government, too.

Y'know, I think there's a lot of that going around these days. [g]
