I had a wonderful, wonderful birthday dinner with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi at The Key Manor on Richmond Road. A lovely meal, and crème brulée for dessert - perfect. The best in town, as they claimed? Maybe. Just maybe.

I'm so sorry I missed your birthday. Happy belated birthday, my dear!!!

Your birthday dinner sounds mouth-watering. I looked at the menus -- OMG, to die for! I'm so glad you had such a wonderful time out with friends. :-)

<BIG birthday hug>

Many, many happy returns!

Thank you for the belated wishes - it just prolongs the fun

Yes, it was a terrific birthday meal. And the waiter was cute and didn't mind teasing us. They even put a candle on my crème brulée!

Happy Birthday!! (again)

And yummy! I had a creme brulee recently, let me think where... in France? Oh yes, we stopped on the way from the airport when they got there and it was the only option with the meal for dessert. I don't like creme brulee generally because I just never like the taste of something burnt. Tom takes my toast if gets past brown! Anyway, they really lightly browned the tops of these, and it was delicious!

So perhaps creme brulee can be yummy for me!!!

Anyway, glad you had a great time and a yummy meal!

I'm so glad you found a crème brulée that you liked! And really, if it tastes burnt, they did it wrong... It should just taste caramelized.

Thanks again for the good wishes...!

Yeah, carmelization is probably the goal. But my threshold for burnt probably overlaps most people's carmelized by quite a lot! Or I've just never been anywhere where it was done right. And even this tasted a little burnt to me. Oh well. ;-)

Chances are you'd probably prefer it if it just had brown sugar on top. But the crispness of the caramelized layer is, for me, part of that fun... And I like the way it takes the edge off the sweetness.

Yeah, you're probably right. Burnt is just one of those flavors I don't like. Like some with cilantro/coriander. Though maybe not quite the same, since that's a genetic difference. But who knows! :-)

Tastes are funny things. Sometimes I think I have skewed taste receptors. Which is okay, since there are plenty of foods I like - but I can't handle hot spices at all, even some things other people think are mild. I'm so sensitive to plain back pepper now that it's like having an allergy.

In equal parts: I'm so glad you had a nice time; I'm so sorry I wasn't there.

Crème brulée is truly perfect birthday fare.

You have to be careful not to eat too much beforehand, though. I ate only half my prime rib and then had the rest as a rather luxurious lunch today.

Happy Belated Birthday!
