I didn't intend to change my LJ design this evening. Really, I didn't. I sat down at the computer intending to do something entirely different. But... I got a little carried away.

I feel as if I should give it a name, like "Endymion" or "Jack With Gun". Maybe "Cardiff Showdown"?

For the moment, I love it.

I like very much- is this one of the layouts you can choose? If so would you share the name- there is a lot I could use- different pics etc- but a good base to start with.

It's actually exactly the same layout design I had before - Flexible Squares. I just set all the backgrounds and frames (including the sidebar and entries) all to #fbfbef, the links to #b40404 and... um... #660000. Then I designed a new picture (in the same size as the old one) and slotted it in as a CSS change.

And that makes it sound so simple - it took me ages, with a lot of trial and error, but it was fun. I like the clean look it gives it all.

I look forward to seeing what you do.

ah, you got rid of the squares- I do hate them- they chop the page up. I will keep that in mind for when I have time to do this-- waiting for the pages to load is a bugger on dialup.

CSS change sounds difficult- is there a tutorial?

Yes. Essentially, I just made all the squares and the border of the squares, the same colour, so they disappeared.

I didn't find a CSS tutorial, though I'd like to - if you find one, do let me know! Originally I'd copied it from someone else, and I stuck to the same now.

I went into Profile - Customize Style Journal.

Then under 'Customize your Theme', at the bottom of the list, "Custom CSS".

Then (among other stuff) it has a box with the heading "Custom external stylesheet URL". In that box I already had the following:

.headerimage {
height: 300px;
background-image: url("http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h10/fajrdrako/twbanner_jack08.jpg") !important;
background-repeat: no-repeat !important;
background-attachment: scroll !important;
background-position: center !important;

margin-bottom: 15px;
}

What I changed was just the URL of the photo - "banner_jack08" instead of the previous .jpg, which I'd called "fajrdrako.jpg".

Then you click on 'save changes' and then go and you look at the results by going to the LJ itself, with your fingers crossed.

Good! I do, too. And I feel more confident about my ability to make changes now, too. I like visual changes.

"Everything changes."

Thanks - glad you like it! Yes, I liked the way gun-toting Jack turned out - and as you say, the general effect is calm, despite Jack's pose in the image. It gives the page a non-boring touch but still keeps the general calm effect. (Maybe because it's sepia? Maybe because it's Jack?)

When I started out I had different images in mind, but I saw this screencap from "They Keep Killing Suzie" and I liked the image.

I'd like to make or find more Jack/Doctor images, but sadly, they aren't easy to find - at least, not the way I want them - and I don't have the resources or skills to do much messing with photos. My software for image manipulation is sort of basic - cropping and poking at the colour is really the extent of it.
