Torchwood series 2
Sep. 8th, 2008 09:29 pmAnother good article: this one about series 2 Torchwood. Now, didn't I make all these points myself a few zillion LJ posts ago?
Especially the 'more sex, please' item. Love the line, "We really need to get back to the good old-fashioned interspecies deviant sex plots." I heard things from Russell T Davies and the BBC that made me suspect they want to make Torchwood more kid-friendly. I hope not.
And more Martha. Oh, yes, yes, yes, more Martha, please! And this time, give her a good dynamic role in the plot.

Date: 2008-09-09 03:03 am (UTC)Kid-friendly Torchwood. Heh. Funny. "Bland," that means? I read kid-friendly sci fi from the age of seven or eight. I learned about alternative lifestyles and sexualities from it. THAT is "kid-friendly"! Support and encourage open-mindedness and creative free thought, and play around a little in the doing of it. That'd take care of the eight-year-old me just fine.

Date: 2008-09-09 07:19 am (UTC)Remember that DW would have finished filming before S4 started airing. Heck, probably even before Martha's Torchwood eps were aired. My guess is that TPTB didn't want to definitely say that Martha was going to join Torchwood until they'd seen how fans reacted to her TW appearances.
Plus the long gap between filming the respective series, may have meant that they couldn't get a firm committment from FA about the next season.
Personally, while I do like Martha, I didn't enjoy her as much on Torchwood as I'd thought I would. I think it was mainly because her presence took away screentime from the regular characters - specifically Ianto.
Then again, even without Martha, those whole 3 episodes were going to be Owen's episodes.
Anyway, I'm not sorry that she's not going to be on S3.

Date: 2008-09-16 10:07 pm (UTC)Yes, and there was Martha, large as life in Torchwood: Lost Souls. I was happy to hear her!
I think they like to leave their options open, which is a good thing. It makes us curious, and speculate, and that's a kind of publicity. It means they can be flexible if they need to be - if Freema Agyeman gets another job, or Noel Clarke, they can adjust accordingly. They have a long history of making it look as if one thing is happening when it's really another.
I can't imagine that they thought Martha would be anything less than a success wherever she appeared. She'd proven herself already.
Martha was sadly wasted in Torchwood - she had some great scenes and moments in "Reset" and then basically had nothing else to do. As a fill-in for Owen, we hardly saw her do as much as Owen normally does. Which sometimes isn't much. We could at least have seen her go Weevil Hunting!
I don't think she took time away from Ianto. It isn't as if he got a lot of screen time when she wasn't there, either. I'd generally rather see Martha than Ianto, but I don't think it works that way, either. We didn't see less of him because we saw more of her... in fact, some of Martha's best Torchwood scenes were with Ianto.
I'm betting she'll be in series 4.
Or maybe not. A lot can happen between now and then.

Date: 2008-09-10 03:00 am (UTC)I actually think that nobody really knows what they want to do with Torchwood, and so they are right now not really doing anything! Just jump in and swim, people, yes?

Date: 2008-09-10 03:46 pm (UTC)Yeah, that seems to be it. Or, rather, a new character shares his adventures for a while, and then is forced to leave. (None of them have left voluntarily. Well, Martha went sort-of voluntarily, but only as making the best of a difficult situation.)
Torchwood is going fine - the new radio play is on today! I'm looking forward to it. They know what they're doing, they just haven't told us yet.
Me, I want Martha back.

Date: 2008-09-09 07:23 am (UTC)The problem with bringing a new character onto a 5 character show is that somebody is going to lose out in terms of screentime, and (unsurprizingly) Ianto was the one to suffer. (although I'll forgive TPTB a lot for including that 'dabbling' scene ;-)
As for making Torchwood more kid-friendly. I doubt it. The show is still going to be being broadcast in a 9pm slot. That's post-watershed. TPTB are not going to waste a post-watershed slot on a kiddie show. Now if they'd said they were going to air it at 7 or 8 pm, then I'd be worried.

Date: 2008-09-10 03:50 pm (UTC)Sadly, Martha was wasted in two episodes out of the three.
while I think BG is probably the best actor on the show, I wish they'd spread the focus around a bit.
I agree that Burn Gorman is a good actor, but I still don't like Owen much, and was bored by most of his series-two themes. Not that I don't find Owen interesting - especially in series 1 - but I liked all the other characters more.

I don't think so. I agree that Ianto should get more screen time! But it isn't a matter of 'who else is in the episode'. The episodes that had fewest characters, like "Random Shoes" and "A Day in the Death" still hardly featured Ianto, so it isn't as if they use him to fill spaces.
(although I'll forgive TPTB a lot for including that 'dabbling' scene ;-)
Great moments in Torchwood!
Soo-prize, Soo-prize, Soo-prize!
